Art terms are very helpful, thats how my friends tend to explain things too. That's the only bag i have thats pink at all so i think its my only choice right now xD Im still in the process of finding shoes and a headbow so i could get those in a darker pink or something like that. Fashion is so complicated D:

Yeah, lol. Well, you could always go with a white purse and white accessories. White is a pretty goo stand-by, since white stockings are so common.

Dear fellow cosplayers,
I love lolita essence and style, but I have very little fashion sense. I feel that my latest attempt is lacking something. Is it even lolita? It was thrown together for the ALA picnic.

When ever i think of lolita I think of "prim and proper" but of course this doesn't describe every style.

Your petticoat should not be showing, your shirt should be tucked in (buttoned up with a cute floppy bow tie would also be cute, maybe white), and the gloves seem out of place

ETA;
The fishnets are also out of place. Go for a cute kneehigh or tights.

Seconded. If your shirt is too long to be able to button it up all the way down, then it should be tucked in, otherwise it looks sloppy. Your petticoat is also the wrong shape, you can remedy this by removing a couple of layers. Here's a little thread about that, and how the OP of the thread fixed hers. http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.ph...etti+too+poofy

Fish nets are pretty much always a no-no, because they have too much of a sexual stigma behind them, which lolita is trying to stay away from. The only times I've heard of it being done effectively is the RARE occasion in Ero or Punk. Fingerless gloves are usually frowned upon, except in punk.

But I can see that you are headed in the right direction! Just snip the petti, skip the gloves, tuck in the shirt, and wear normal opaque tights or knee-high socks instead of fishnets, and you're ready to go! ^_^ So you weren't very far off, and you were able to realize that what you were wearing was off somehow, so I would say you have more fashion sense than you think you do! After all, if you had no sense, then how would you have known that something was amiss?

I really don't feel like bothering with a new thread, so I'll just ask here.
What can I wear with a skirt like this? http://www.retroscopefashions.com/im...ita/g00004.jpg I'm dying my white one. I just bought it at I-con last year because It was so cute, and it was only $20 because it had a stain. But it is several sizes two big and I'm getting it tailored at the waist. Oh yes, will the stain go away if I dye it? Or should I bleach it out?
I may dye it blue or pink because I already bought a black dress. What color and what type of top should I wear with it?

Thank you o01101011 and Kirotighta. Yes, the shirt is untucked because the skirt is too short to wear with that petticoat- it would show top and bottom. I know that showing a teeny bit of crinoline on the bottom was good in the 50's, but not so good in lolita? Duly noted. ^_^

Also, I don't like showing skin much at all. Thus the stockings and gloves- they made me feel more covered. Long black and white striped socks would be better, perhaps?

It was really hot that day- does anyone have an idea of what a casual lolita look might be for these CA summer picnics? How does one survive the summer heat and stay properly attired?

Sorry, no striped socks. They are frowned upon in lolita. ^_^;; I would only wear stripey socks in punk lolita or light colored ones [ex, Alice blue and white] in sailor lolita. Try some black knee socks, you can get them at Target. ^^
And for the summer I would say where lighter cottons in light colors, or maybe even casual lolita.

Oh, it's good to have stockings, just not fishnet stockings. Covering a lot of skin is an important part of lolita, and lots of lolitas wear gloves, just not that kind of glove.

Here, this girl is a good example of gothic: http://community.livejournal.com/dai...55.html#cutid1
but you can only see that post if you have a LJ, so I'll just post the picture here as well.

Whoops! Sorry Ri-kunTehFluffy!

I think it depends on how dark you dye it. If you dye it very dark, it probably wouldn't be a problem. But if you want to dye it a light color, I would bleach it first, and then dye it.

Thanks, I did read the handbook in 2006 or maybe 2007? It wasn't very specific. I actually followed the old guide with my picnic punk attempt. The website looks like it has been fleshed out since then, so I'll read it again. Thank you for the link! I wouldn't have remembered where to find it. ^_^

Fluffy- if the fabric with the stain you're dying is white always bleach first. Even if you dye it dark, the color difference will show otherwise (unless you dye it black). I've tried to skip this step and the result was very frustrating.

Is this blouse okay? (as in quality wise) Or should I just toss it out and burn it?

..Yeah, I realize the pink ribbon is tacky and should be replaced.

It's the right style, but, the problem being is that it's just covered in low quality lace. It could be salvageable if you replaced the lace.
