Low Quality Portal Gun?

I'm so bad about looking online first. This site IS my 'online'

But anyway. Anybody have any ideas on how I can make a low quality Portal gun from (you guessed it) Portal?

When I say low quality, I mean I don't want to spend a fortune and be pulling hairs making a fiberglass light up LED, whatever. I want something with a claw, and a big white body. So far my best idea is to get one of those claw things and build on it with foam. Y'know the claw thing I'm refering to, right? It's essentially a big metal or plastic bar with a handle at one end and a claw at the other, and you squeeze the handle to close the claw.

So yeah, any help is greatly appreciated.

Um, yeah, thanks han-pan. I forgot to include ref pics.

I don't like the top one, it just doesn't remind me of the portal gun I saw in the game.

I think I read of someone using a milk jug or something, but I honestly have no clue o.O;; I'm going to try to wire mine so I can have LED's, so my construction will probably be different, but I can tell you that I'm going to probably be using PVC pipes of different sizes. But I do like the idea of using one of those reach-yclaw-y things.

Reference pic (SHAMELESS PULG!):

Doing this on the cheap, here's what I'd do:

Get yourself a few lengths of 3" and 4" PVC pipe. Home Depot sells them in 3' lengths, which is more than you need. Also get a 4" coupler and a 3" coupler. Total cost so far is about $15

Put the 3" pipe inside the 4" pipe, and cut the tops off both to make the "U" shape in the middle of the gun. You're going for something that looks like this:

http://www.cosplay.com/photo/1775625/

File out the inside of the 4" coupler and stick it on the back, cut the 3" coupler into 3 rings (2 about 1/2" wide a piece, one about 1" wide) and slide them over the front of the barrel thats sticking out. To glue all of this together you're gonna want to use epoxy. Thats another $5. Total cost so far, approx $20.

At the top of this image, you can see what i mean about the 4" coupler and the 3" rings:

You can fill in any gaps with clay, apoxie sculpt, bondo, whatever you happen to have laying about. Hot glue might work too, but you can't sand that. After you've got all the gaps you want filled, paint the whole thing black. 2 cans of black should do it, $5 a piece. Total so far, $30.

Take a plastic tennis ball tube, rip off the label, and stick it in the "U" shape you carved out before. Voila! You have your portal chamber. (I won't get into lights, that might spike the cost) If you have one laying about, great. You can possibly find one for free somewhere at tennis court?

More difficult: the white casings. Go to your local thrift store and start poking around the tupperware and sporting goods. See if you can find a few plastic bowls to carve up or maybe a skateboarding helmet. Bring your barrel with you to try some of them out. maybe $2-5 a piece, that brings ya to $40 or so.

One can of white gloss paint may do it, you might need 2. $45-ish.

Claws: you could make these with black foamcore or illustration board, an exacto knife, and hot glue or epoxy. Assuming you have the glue and the knife, the board will only run about $5-10 at a hobby store. You can also try balsa wood or poplar, but be careful not to crack it during use. You should have some black paint left over from before too for this.

Paint, 2 cans, Black: $5/ea
Paint, 2 cans, Gloss white: $5/ea
3" x 3' PVC: $5
4" x 3' PVC: $5
4" PVC Coupler: $3
3" PVC Coupler: $3
Tennis ball thingy: Free?
Tupperware/helmet (thrift store): $5-ish
Illustration board/foamcore/balsa: $5-10

Total around $50, give or take. I don't know if you're shooting for something in the $10 range, but if you are I can't really help ya. This is the cheapest I can think to make one while still having it remain accurate to the game.
