Wig Storage?

*ahem* Forgive me so much for asking this, but I am a 100% n00b at owning a wig... I've never handled one before, and I don't really know anything about caring for them... And Cosworx just had their Thanksgiving sale, so (like an idiot) I ordered all of the wigs I was wanting for my cosplays next year. After ordering them, I realized that...I have no idea what to do to take care of them! I think I ordered them to early, seeing as they won't be needed until next July, so I'm now a little worried... I don't have a proper place to store them yet (I'm going to work on my room so that I can make it more wig-friendly) and I was wondering...Is it safe to just leave the wigs in their packaging for the next few months? Or will it mess with their shape/texture/design/etc?I don't trust myself just yet with them, and I don't want to ruin them. I did however purchase a few Halloween wigs from Wal-Mart on their Halloween sale so that I could get a little more experience with those before I focus on these better ones... So, what is the best method for storing a wig for a few months? Once again, I'm sorry to bother any of you with my n00b-ness, but I'm just a little worried. ;-; HALP plz.

They should be perfectly fine in their bags ^^ (after all, that is how the company has to store them!)

If its a wig that is going to be styled/is extremely long you may want to invest in a foam head or two and clear some shelf space where it could hang. Otherwise carefully laying them out in a drawer where they won't be fussed with can be a good storage method, I tend to tuck mine back into ziplock bags to keep them dust free. Plus this way if I squeeze all the air out they can't shift around if I do rummage through said drawer.

If they're not styled, I just keep mine in the packaging. I make sure they go into the bag neatly and store them flat. You should also keep them out of heat! So don't leave them lying around in your car in the middle of the day! You could also buy some of those hard boxes people store hats for your unstyled wigs. =)

Whew...! Thanks so much! ^^; They're un-styled wigs, and I don't plan on styling them for a few more months...(once I get enough practice on my Halloween wigs) So I can just leave them in their packaging for the next few months? I'm so relieved! =3 Thank you!

As long as they aren't being moved and jostled around a lot, and they're protected from heat and dust, most any storage method is okay. For long ones, get it nice and combed and detangled, then put hair ties (not too tightly) every 8 inches or so, coil it up and store it in a box....that's what I'm currently doing with my Tsuruya wig.

Keep the netting they come in, too. If you stick them in the netting and then in the bag, it can help prevent tangles they could get from being inside the bag, especially for longer wigs.

And yes, as long as they aren't in the sun or a hot place or wet or anything, you can store them anywhere. Heck, I once forgot about a wig I had squashed inside a box just big enough for it for about six months and it was fine. (Not that I'd recommend doing that, though!)

Wow, that's all really good advice for the long wigs as well! O: The wigs I'm getting are pretty long (around 30 inches) so I'm thankful for that! Thank you all for the wonderful advice! =3 I'm not as paranoid now!

Do that! I do it with all of my wigs and it really helps. KatieBair also sells these amazing wig-comb things... Sooooo nice on tangled wig.

I also keep the cardboard rings that come with the wig so I put them in the netting coiled up a spiral, then put the ring around the wig, and then put them in a plastic bag and seal it closed. I keep about 30+ wigs like that (none of my wigs are really heavily styled), in a box under my bed, and I check every month or so to see if they're doing okay.

If you're really worried about keeping the wigs in a bag, you can make your own homemade "foam heads" out of things you have around the house. After learning about this from a wig seller, I was sold. All you need is an empty (and preferably clean) "cup o' noodle" bowl for your wig to hang on (as it would on a foam head) and a base (honestly, a stack of books or a cardboard box would work) for you to put the bowl on. I'm sure there's lots of improvisations on this method, but that's the one that I use, and it works just fine.

Another tip, if you have no place to keep them where they won't be touched, like if you don't have an empty draw to keep them in for the next few months, fold them up in their netting, place 'em in a shopping bag, hook a hanger around them and put them in the back of ur closet. Won't be touched there
