Nausicaa, breathing mask

So I'm starting on a Nausicaa costume.

Problem A
I've pretty much figured everything else out, but I'm having trouble thinking of what material I could work with to make the mask. (Side view, front view.) I'm not very good at sewing, and don't want to work with something too, too hard.

I was thinking either a thin fake leather material? Thin enough to work with and be light, hard enough to stay rigid? (An inner structure within the mask would hurt. That, or craft foam. It's flexible, but is it actually easy to work with? And while it might turn out alright, it won't really look too "real".

Here's a quick diagram I made of what I am thinking of making. It's not quite true to the costume, but that kind of molding would be difficult... (Or rather, impossible with what I have.)

Problem B
Well, first off, no real leather. So where do I go about finding fake leather or something similar? I've been in fabric stores and don't quite remember seeing anything like it... (Or is it a common thing to find?)
If anybody in the Toronto area can point me to a material and a store, I would love you forever.

Help please! ;__;
