How to choose what cosplay to wear/make?

How do you choose what cosplay you want to make or wear to each con? How long does that process take you? I seem to never be able to make up my mind as to what day to wear the costume and stuff like that. What do you do?

Well I have a ever growing list of charactrs I would *like* to cosplay and then when it comes time for a cosplay decision I choose off that list (unless I already have a plan). My decision depends on what I feel like doing at the time lol, like I really want to cosplay tira from soul calibur 4 but that will have to wait for summer because canada is too cold for clothes like that now xD

Like Duckie, I have a huge list of characters I want to cosplay as, and then I just pick and choose off the list. Sometimes I'll pick a character if a few of my friends want to walk around as a group or do a shoot together, or if I want to go to a specific gathering I'll make a costume I can wear to attend in.

... Umm.. For me, it just kinda happens.. I'll be watching an anime, or looking through an art book, and I'll just decide "Hey, that's cool, I'm gonna make it"

Well, I choose cosplay choices based on my skill level and just how much I connect with the character. As far as days, I just wear costumes usually the second day where everyone is out and about wanting to take pics and such. Doesn't take long for me.

my trick is not to think about what cosplay i want to choose but just come up with them as i go through my fandom.

they come up at random and a few are intentional.

Kairi for example i was just playing the game and thought. "her dress is cute...." and then went with her.

Peach was a lost bet....

and CHocobo was actualy an extra credit project xD

and often times i find now my friends convince me to do some cosplays they want to see

I usually pick my cosplays based on which characters I really like. Degree of difficulty on outfits doesn't really matter as long as I love the character. ^_^

Except for Kairi's dress. I just made that cause it's adorable.

I'm one of those people that has to like the character to feel comfortable walking around in his/her "skin" for a day or more. If I'm not comfortable with the character, I'll end up being uncomfortable with the costume, and it shows. And since cons normally only lasts for three days, I don't feel like spending at least one of them feeling uncomfortable over a costume. Of course, if said character has a great, comfortable costume that is fun to make, that is just a bonus.

There's so many factors. Can I walk around the con in it? Is it weather-friendly? Can I afford it? Is it in my skill level? Is there any way I could look good without a wig? (hehe) But really, in the end it's just liking the character. I also try to choose a character similar in personality so I won't have to put on much of a show, since I'm not at a con to be an actress. If they also look even slightly similar in appearance, then it's definitely going to be made.

1) How much time do I have before a con/other event that may or may not involve cosplay?
2) How difficult is the costume?
3) How much money will this cost me?D:
4) Is the charater too old/young for me?

BD Basically.

Making a costume:

1. I pick a character that I like/can relate to and whose costume(s) I like.

2. Decided if I have the skill level required for the costume. (Assuming its a difficult one and not just a school uniform or regular type clothing.)

3. Decided how much it's going to cost me to make.

4. Figure out how much time it will take me to make.

If all of these things work out then I make the costume. If not then I add it to my ever growing list of costumes I want to make and save it for another time.

Chosing a costume for a convention:

Usually, that depends on what I feel like wearing at the time, what photoshoots I might attend and on what group cosplays my friends and I are planning. Occasionally it also depends on what type of convention I'm attending. I wear anime cosplay to all the conventions I attend but I sometimes wear other types of costumes to multi-genre and sci-fi/fantasy cons as well as the anime related ones.
