Which Camera should I buy?
I'm switching my major, in college, from Exercise Physiology to Photo Illustration. In doing so, I have to purchase a camera plus a MacBook Pro. Obviously, I'm into cosplaying, I cosplay myself, and I would like to take some photos at cons and etc.
The camera's below are the only options the school of Visual Comm. Design gave me. If at all possible, can I get pro's and con's for each brand from users of the bands and which one would be best in my situation. (I guess, what is a good camera that I can photograph cosplay with as well as normal stuff) And is there anyway I can find those camera's cheaper than the prices the School gave me? Nikon D 200 (with 18-70mm lens) 10.2 mega-pixels $1900 Nikon D 80 (with 18-135mm lens) " " $1100 Canon 5D (with 24-105mm lens)12.8 megapixels $3400 Canon 30 D (with 17-85mm lens) 8.2 mp $1500 Canon 30 D (28-135mm lens) " " $1300 Thank you so much! |

My Standard response to this question:
Head to your local camera store and try them all out to see which one(s) you like. TFC

The Nikon D200 is no longer in production. Its successor is the Nikon D300. For about $2000, you can now get a new Nikon D300 with a 18-135mm lens. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...al_Camera.html Alternatively, you can buy a used camera. A used D300 can be bought for about $1350: http://www.adorama.com/US%20%20%20%2...39673468394307 A refurbished Nikon D200 is sold here for $800. http://www.adorama.com/INKD200R.html...o=niko n+d200 You can also buy used lenses as well from these places. Likewise, the Nikon D80 has been discontinued. The Nikon D90 is its successor. You can visit the websites above and find the prices. Note: I have bought from both B&H and Adorama (online and at the physical store), so they are legitimate businesses. Having used a D200, the primary weaknesses of the camera are "short" battery life and noise performance above ISO 800. If you shoot in RAW mode and use a Vibration Reduction (VR) lens, expect to use up most of the battery in about 500-800 shots, instead of a typical 1000+ shots. If you use the D200 above ISO 800, expect to see some noise. But those weakness never really bothered me too much, since I do not shoot professionally. You can go to Flickr and see usable photographs from the D200. I cannot say anything about the Canons, as I have not used them, but those prices are also a bit out of date. As tfcreate mentioned, if you can visit a store locally that carries these cameras, the store should have a display model for you to play around with.

Just to update your canon prices.
(these are "fair"/ebay/used prices btw) 5D is only $1500-2000 now. 30D is only $700~ now. (I shoot with 2 30Ds)

Thank you everyone for you advice! I really appreciate it. I found, or rather my parents found, a Nikon D 300 for me that is under $1000. It's used of course, but I'll bet it will get me through school. Thanks so much!

I have a Evolt Its a Very nice camera , but i know alot of people with the rebel that take pictures that look every bit as good as mine!
I think its mostly getting the right lens and such i would research the equiptment and prices of those peices , one of the down sides of my camera is the lack of lens you can buy , but the up side is they seem cheaper than the rebel! , so im my head i win the price war but in the head of rebel owners they have more choices! |

If your shooting at cons I would imagine that you will be doing some indoor shooting too and if you cant get decent natural light then a flash would be very valuable (saves you upping the ISO to much). Nikon do the SB series just budget the one you can best afford.

I personally love my Nikon Coolpix, because the clarity is fantastic, but the only problem is that the files are usually huge, about 1-3 MBs per picture.

Where did you find the >1000 D300?
I ask because that's way too good of a price. There's a running scam where they'll sell you the camera with NOTHING for cheap, and then make you pay a huge amount for the battery, charger, etc. My advice is to go with the D90. Compared to the D300, it's only weakness is being slightly less solidly made, but the image quality is just as good, if not better (same sensor, newer firmware), and it's cheaper and lighter. Edit - only saw the date on the last post. Disregard if this is way out of date.
