Special Limited Workshops
Each workshop has a limited number of students. Sign-up sheets will be available at convention registration. If you sign-up but have to cancel please remove your name from the list so that another may fill that spot. If you are interested in a workshop that is filled please add your name to the wait list and check back with the instructor at the beginning of the class to see if there are any cancellations. (Please note: The Victorian Hairpiece Creation workshop is closed, it required pre-registration.) Supply fees are payable to the instructor at the time of the workshop.

JoAnn Abbott is offering a group of workshops called “The Crazy Quilting Series”, all of these can either be taken alone or combined to complete a crazy quilt. The workshops are Crazy Quilting and Beginning Embroidery, More Embroidery stitches, Silk Ribbon Dyeing, Silk Ribbon Embroidery, Beaded Embroidery. Each is limited to 10 students and has a supply fee of $5.00. JoAnn is allowing observers, the number will be limited based on room size.

Crazy Quilting and Beginning Embroidery (1 Hr.)---
JoAnn Abbott…………………………….Supply fee $5.00
Students will learn the flip and sew method of assembling a crazy quilt block and learn 3 basic stitches to embellish the block. Kit includes all materials needed to complete the project except scissors. Observers are welcome as space allows. (Limit 10 students)

More Embroidery Stitches (1 Hr.)---
JoAnn Abbott……………………………………………….Supply Fee $5.00
Using even-weave fabric to practice on you will learn 5 stitches and see variations of them. Kit includes all materials needed to complete the project except scissors. Observers are welcome as space allows. (Limit 10 students)

Silk Ribbon Dyeing (1 Hr.)---

Like color? Come and dye some silk ribbon to use in your embroidery, and see how fun and easy it can be. Salt resist, alcohol resist and edge dyeing techniques will be demonstrated. Wear “ok to spill on” clothes or bring a smock-just in case. Observers are welcome as space allows. (Limit 10 students)

Silk Ribbon Embroidery (1 Hr.)---

Silk ribbon behaves differently than regular floss, satin, or grosgrain ribbons. Learn how to embroider beautiful flowers to embellish your crazy quilt or your costumes. Observers are welcome as space allows. (Limit 10 students)

Beaded Embroidery (1 Hr.)---

If you can do it with floss, you can do it with beads, once you learn a few tricks to handle the wiggly lil’ sparklies, that is. Beaded backstitch, chain stitch, buttonhole and a variety of other stitches and fringes will be taught. Observers are welcome as space allows. (Limit 10 students)

Blackwork and other Counted Thread Embroidery (1.5 Hrs.)---
Rob Himmelsbach…………Supply fee $4.00
Learn a 16th Century embroidery style, also suitable for circuit diagrams and logic models, runes and spaceships! Make your own Tudor/Elizabethan trim. Spend hours tediously repeating patterns! Rob Himmelsbach (aka Master Geoffrey D’Ayr of Montalban in the SCA) will display and teach some simple period blackwork and also some cross stitch patterns suitable for period costume. (Limited to 12 students)

Daisy Chain Pearl Necklace (2 Hrs)---

Learn the daisy chain beading technique. Create a simple, elegant necklace of pearls woven into a daisy chain pattern with accent seed beads. Once the basic stitch is mastered this project usually takes a couple of hours to complete. Alternative choice of beads will be available, (crystals, mother of pearl, cats-eye stones, etc), provided in a selection of color schemes. Extras will be purchasable. Other beading techniques will be demonstrated and discussed for further experimentation. Handouts will include diagrams of the various methods, books to read, and sources for supplies. Beginner class, no prerequisite knowledge is needed though advantageous to know how to thread a needle. Kit includes all materials to complete the project: beads, needles, thread, diagrams, and handouts. (Limited to 15 students)
Special Limited Workshops


Decorative Knotting: Frogs, Tassels and Trim (3 Hrs.)---JonathaCaspian………………….Supply fee $8.00
Learn to make unique frog fastenings, tassel tops, and braided trim using Korean and Chinese knotting techniques. This hands-on workshop teaches basic knots to make a decorative dragonfly motif, plum blossom knot, and button knot, while presenting an overview of cords, tying styles, and reference books for further study. See how knots are used to embellish accessories and ornament clothing, including militaria, and compare Eastern and Western styles. (Limited to 8 students)

Dyeing to Costume (3.5 Hrs)---

How to get the colors you want in natural (and un-natural) fibers. Are you scared of dyeing? Do you despair finding the color you want in the fabric store? This hands-on workshop lets participants try actual dyeing techniques on silk scarves and cotton handkerchiefs, while presenting an overview of vat dyeing tips, fabric manipulation, and fiber content considerations. Discusses acid/fiber-reactive dyes, hot water dyes, and dye-like fabric paints. Gloves and aprons are supplied, participants are recommended to wear old clothes. (Limited to 10 students)

Fang Making (3 Hrs.)---Marty Gear,
Marvin Bryant………………………………………………Supply fee $10.00
Marty Gear has been making (and wearing) fangs for 50 years. (It figures). For the past three years he has conducted the fang making demonstration panel at Dragon*Con and now it is time for people to actually make their own. Workshop participants will get actual hands on experience taking impressions, pouring models, and actually making a pair of wearable fangs out of dental acrylic. Four different techniques, will be discussed and three demonstrated. Participants will receive a list of materials sources, and half a dozen "Evil Fire Lizard" fang kits will be available for purchase at the workshop for an additional charge. If you've always wanted to learn how do make your fangs this is your chance. Participants should bring note taking materials. All fang making materials will be supplied. (Limited to 12 students)

Jacobean Crewel Embroidery (2 Hrs.)

Learn how to do traditional wool embroidery hands on. Learn a little about the history of it at the same time.

Lattice Smocking (2.5 Hrs.)---
Jonatha Caspian……………………………………………………Supply fee $5.00
North American or Lattice Smocking makes 3-dimensional basketweave and other effects to embellish garments, accessories and home dec items. This complicated-looking technique is simple to learn, requiring only a marking pencil, strong thread, and a hand needle. This hands on workshop lets participants stitch samples of at least two lattice smocking variations, and discusses design and technical considerations for incorporating into costumes. (Limited to 20 students)

Victorian Hairpieces Creation** (2 Hrs.)---

Love those elaborate Victorian Hairstyles but think your hair is too short!? No time to put your long hair into a fabulous Victorian “do”? This workshop will solve your problem! You’ll create one or two hairpieces that you can quickly and easily attach to your hair at a moment’s notice. You’ll learn how to get that look you need for that finished Victorian touch and not worry about another “bad” Victorian Hair Day. Students will need bring: Two or three Jumbo Kanekelon Hair Braids in a color that matches their hair and a wig stand (canvas blockhead or Styrofoam with table clamp), hand-sewing supplies (thimble, needles, embroidery scissors, seam ripper). Kanekelon Hair Braids are available at wig shops and Sally Beauty Supply shops.

mine are at least victorian thingy ^^

and so many other intesresting one ^^
fang would be cool but 3 hours is too long for me=_=
i can't listen for that long ^^;; hehe!
maybe i buy fang lizard thingy dought ^^ the name is cool^^

and frog thingy

and waa many ^^;;
i have to choose =_= that hjard ^^
