Zelda Costume Query

I have a question for all you Zelda cosplayers out there, since I see there are a few. How difficult is it to make the costume (grown up) Zelda wears in Ocarina of Time? I actually took some screenshots from Super Smash Brothers melee because you can do extreme close-up with that and it seems like it shouldn't be too challenging. I've only done the two Quistis costumes to this point so I don't have too much sewing experience under my belt. This looks like a good beginner project. Can anyone confirm or deny this? I'd be most grateful. Thanks!!

I say go for it! I haven't started yet, but I am undertaking the same task. I think the hardest parts of the costume will be to make the ornamental armor. Also, if you make her dress out of satin or something slippery of that sort, it will be difficult to cut (it frays) and sew, especially for a beginner.

Amethyst Angel has a good method for making armor. She even made some Zelda armor herself.

I role played as Zelda once upon a time. I have a good full-body pic of her (the only thing added is a flower brooch on that strip of cloth on her collar, disregard that)...

I searched on cosplay.com and also did a google search for pictures of people who had already cosplayed as Zelda to get ideas on how to make things and how the costume might look IRL. Best of luck to you!

Hey thanks, Princess! That is a really good picture of Zelda. I think I'm going to proceed with this project (in a week or so - have Otakon to think of now - only four more days!!). I hate sewing with satin. I did have to use a dark navy satin for the vest-type thing that goes across the back of the SeeD uniform and over the shoulders. It wasn't fun, but I think I could do it again, if need be. I don't even know what fabric I'll be using yet (I'm just starting to do the research), but if I end up using satin, trust me, I know I'll be in for a treat. =) Anyway, thanks again for the advice!

I have to say, if you want to make this costume: go for it! But I wouldn't call it a good beginner costume. ^^; Princess Zelda's OoT costume is the first one I ever made, and... well, unless you have TONS of time and lots of money, it's probably not the best costume to start off on. I'm not trying to tell you not to do it, I'm just warning you that it's a lot more complicated than it initially looks.

Good luck!

I'm guessing everything's probably harder than it initially looks. That's a lesson I already learned after screwing up the SeeD uniform skirt twice. (I didn't quite grasp the whole zipper thing until the third time around.) Anyway, thanks for the warning - your advice is much appreciated. By the way, your Zelda costume is cute and I love your Tetra costume. =) If I manage to actually pull off Zelda's costume, maybe that will make other things not quite so hard for me. I'll have to keep my fingers crossed!

LOL, zippers are a pain. I gave up on the zipper foot for my machine and now I just hand-sew my zippers. It's more time consuming, but... er, it's easier for me. ^^;

As for my Zelda costume, I'm gonna be redoing it. ^^; I'm not overly happy with it! I didn't have the tiara, and my armor didn't fit me right (and didn't look very good anyway.) and... er, well, I could go on, but you don't want to hear it. LOL.

Again, good luck! <3

I've wanted to make a Zelda, too... but now that I really look at that pic (thanks, Princess Destiny) it *does* look a bit complicated... >_<; Blah!

It's like.. uh yaeh.. that'll be easy.. but my current project has had months of research/mind work, and just now I'm begining to put it together (that'll take a while o_O)

It seriously is one thing to see it on the screen.. another when you have the fabric, and yet another when you've been sitting there and are getting fedu pbecause you've just spent 2 hours trying to get something right and it's still not too good.

Ooh, Serria - What a cute little ferret! Is he/she yours? I have three little fuzzies myself - they're soooo cute but they sure are a handful! (Sorry, that was a little off-topic, but I coudn't resist!)
I agree with you, Isaldur (and everyone else here), in that I've found in my brief sewing experience that it really is easier to just take an idea you have in your mind and create it, rather than model it off something else. I just started making Renaissance Faire costumes and they're so much easier than me sitting there, downloading billions and billions (well, okay, not quite) of Quistis pictures - Quistis from the back, Quistis from the front, Quistis close-up of collar, Quistis close-up of hair, etc., etc., etc. (Btw, I did find a discrepancy in the collar of her SeeD uniform - in most of the pictures, the gold brocade doesn't go all the way around the back, but in a few screenshots, it does. Trying to figure out what to do with that made my little hurt.) Anyway, I ramble too much. Sorries!

Er, I wouldn't recomend this as a good beginer costume...if you want to simplify the outfit and not do all of the embroidering on her apron (well, I suppose you could paint on the designs if you wanted to) and perhaps not do her armor, it would be a fairly simple costume to complete. However, I'm just finishing up my Zelda costume and...it hasn't been a simple costume to make (if you look at her armor, belt, tiara, apron, ect., there is a TON of detail to Zelda's costume).

It really depends on how in-depth you want to go with your costume; if you want a simpler version, I say, "Go for it!" If you want to do the full out costume, I would say, "Wait for a little while on this one..."

And as far as creating your own patterns, be careful (they can be tricky)!!
