Death the Kid - Guns?

Hey cosplayers~ I-I'm asking for a little help here ^^;;

Okay, so I'm doing a Death the Kid cosplay for Otakon 2009-- problem is, this is what I consider the first time I'm taking cosplay seriously, and I need help with Kiddo's twin guns. I do have some prop-making experience....having made Axel's chakrams, but guns seem a little bit out of my range?

I've read about people using dollar-store toy guns and painting them, but the dollar stores here don't seem to have them -__- Should I use foam, or wood to make them...? I want them to be sturdy enough that they wouldn't break if I dropped them.

Thanks in advance! <3

I'm sure your problem has long since been solved... but thought I'd share what I did for anyone else who's looking to do DTK.

I made a template of the basic gun shape from thin plastic (I used a plastic folder) and traced it multiple times on foamcore board, which was then cut out and glued together in layers. I then used balsa wood and PVC pipe to add details and painted them. Progress shots are here:
