Jewelry Bonney hat?
I've already made three of these suckers and all of them aren't what I want. XD The last one I made was acceptable, but not fantastic.
This is what it looks like: http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w...0308231417.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w...ma/bonney3.jpg http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w...ma/bonney2.jpg This is what mine looks like: http://www.cosplay.com/photo/2051149/ Mine isn't tall enough and it's a little floppy. I think maybe if I used interfacing it could be okay, but the hat really looks more round than how mine is. So basically, does anyone know what that hat is actually called? And if it doesn't exist in real life, how...can I make a better hat? XD;

Since fabric is flat, there are a limited number of ways that you can make it round just using seams - and the seams generally end up in places where you don't want them. Yours looks pretty good to me, but as you say, it's not quite as round as the reference.
To get a really domed crown, like say on a derby, you have to steam and stretch felt over a round form. Here's a tutorial from the Costumer's Manifesto that might be useful: http://www.costumes.org/Advice/costc...al/tmpjk10.htm |

Oooh, that tutorial is really useful! Thank you!
I used fleece for the first three, felt would probably work a LOT better. After I make the dome, I'd just attach the rounded brim the same way I did on the other hats...right? XD;

It is nice, isn't it? I really like that it's all stuff that's readily available (unlike many millinery tutorials).
For the brim part of your hat, you might have to do some soaking and stretching of the felt to get it to curve the way that you want it to. But once you have it the right shape, I would think that you could just glue it on similar to how they attach the brim in the tutorial, except that your brim will be two parts and sticking up instead of sticking out (I hope that makes sense!) |
