Meh, the plot is mostly mumbo jumbo as far as I'm concerned. I don't think you miss all that much by playing the 3rd one first. There's a thing called alchemy/psyenergy. It is necessary to the world but can also destroy it. Some people can control it. They go adventuring to save the world. That's about all you need to know! Though you'd definitely NOT want to play the second one first since it is basically part 2 of the first game cliffhanger and you can import your characters from the first game.

But still - I'd play the first one and see how you like it. Among other things, like I said, the new one really doesn't have any advantages over the earlier ones. And you should be able to find the first one used (and cheaper). (And unlike me, you may be the kind of person who does care about the story.) Gameplay-wise, the later two are really just more of the same, so if you like the first then go on from there. The new one has a ton of exposition. Most of it is presented in a way that's not too intrusive but I'm glad that I don't have to pay any attention to it.

I will say that navigating in the new one is a little more challenging - in a good way, in the sense of I'll be able to see a treasure chest or Djinn and it will take me longer to figure out how to get to it than in the earlier games (or maybe I've just gotten stupider in the last SEVEN YEARS).

Overall though, it's kind of weird that I liked the first games at all, because for the most part it's the kind of game I don't usually like. I normally don't have the patience for turn-based battles. It helps that you have more choices in the GS battle system (basic attack, psyenergy, Djinn, summons, items) and the battle animation and music are fun. And I like how your psyenergy and class changes depending on the Djiin configuration. But the games aren't very hard. Most of the dungeons are pretty linear, the puzzles are really easy and the only times I ever died in the first two games were the final boss and one other optional hard boss. I've yet to die in Dark Dawn.

I wish I could figure out why I like the Golden Sun series so much. I keep trying other games that I think will be similar and I just can't get into them - yeah, I'm talking about YOU DQIX!!!

On Chapter 11 in DS2, while Persona 3 port continues to make me grind/die/repeat like crazy. Stupid Fatlus!

Anyway, I'm playing the Dating Game. I just unlocked the "Erik's phone number" achievement, and tomorrow I will start the quest where he takes you to the movies. UH I MEAN... Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. I'm playing Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.

I didn't know AC: B had a hint of dating sim (if I were to play a dating sim it'd. Have to be the one Gene Starwind plays in that one Outlaw Star episode)

I've been going back and forth between Persona 3 Portable and the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, as I'm really excited for both Skyrim and Catherine coming out this year.

I'm pretty sure she was talking about her actual love life.

You know, as a joke.

That's what I thought too, but gave her the benefit of the doubt.

Spirit Tracks would be the best Zelda ever if...
- it was longer
- the tower was harder, like phantom hourglass
- didn't do the whole railroad bit, though I admit the game's story makes good use of it.

In other words, i want link to the past's size/length with Spirit Tracks's zelda assist concepts and phantom hourglass's difficult timed temple. I'm looking forward to Skyward Sword because I want something like Ocarina of Time's quality but without time travel. Also, whenever Ganon's not the villain the game's gimmick is hit-or-miss.

You are a very patient man. I will probably never beat Spirit Tracks or Phantom Hourglass. I just hate the train/boat too much (or in the case of Phantom hourglass, the repeating dungeon). I don't have enough patience for these games. I can't wait to see what crap they pull on the 3DS. I bet it's going to be have an airplane.... Zelda: Mystical Airplane or something. I'm calling it now.

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA and the Thopter of Tranquility

Anyway... revisiting the dungeon paced the story better while being one of zelda games' more difficult dungeons. The boat imo worked the same as link wandering around on an empty field, it's the railroad travel that I feel takes away from the series' core concept. After my technically second play of PH I'd say the game's real problem is it gives way too many hints, which I think they added to lure in kids under 12 who typically don't understand how to play zelda. Granted, even with all the hints in the world, the timed dungeon was still tough.

The stylus control turning zelda into one-button gameplay is probably the best interface a zelda game could have. The big titles feel burdensome at times with all the buttons and functions. If they made a harder zelda with a good gimmick and kept what I call "standard hyrule" aka link to the past or ocarina of time, AND use the stylus controls, we would have ourselves a winner.
