Making black eyes for a latex mask

So... my newfound love of making latex masks has convinced me that I want to construct a costume of newly-revealed studly assassin Thane from Mass Effect 2.

Handsome devil, isn't he? Anyway, once the mask is completed, I am struck with the black eye issue. As black contacts are both expensive and foreign to me, I was thinking of possibly making a kind of lens to put on the inside of the mask, paint it a highly polished black, and drill a small hole to see through. Might this idea be effective? Has anybody else done a mask with inhuman eyes like this, without using contacts?

Most masks that don't have the entire eye cut out usually just have a small hole in the fake eye, so the lens idea should work.

Also, this idea probably wouldn't be helpful to you, but I've seen cosplays of some characters with black scleras achieve the look by applying black makeup to the eyelid, putting false eyelashes in the crease of the eye, and simply closing their eyes for photos.

Would attaching tanning goggles work? His eyes are kind of that shape--at least from that photo it looks like his eyeballs pop out a little bit. I haven't seen too many photos of Thane, I'm trying to avoid spoilers on message boards!

Edit: This is such an old post, I should really look at dates x.x Sorry if I resurrected a dead thread

I'm working on a silicone prosthetic that uses the same idea. I bought acrylic hemispheres, ground the edges to match the shape needed to fit against my eye socket and imbedded them into my sculpt. They have a sprue point in the center, and that allowed me to anchor them into the mold before doing the pour. For slushcasting, it's pretty much the same idea, only you may need to cut away a bit of the excess that cures over the inside of the eye lens.

For dark eyes, it may be better to buy a tinted plastic sheeting and thermoform it to the desired shape. Sunglass plastic may work for this, but that's just conjecture on my part.
