NYAF's Cosplay Variety Show

"NYAF’s Masquerade is Saturday night. It’s a competition with some big prizes. But along with the prizes come a lot of rules, and if you’ve got a skit that doesn’t fit, what are you to do? Enter NYAF’s Cosplay Variety Show. From avant garde, to absurd, to the yaoi coupling of Max Fenix and Master Chief, the NYAF Cosplay Variety Show is a non-competitive event for big, bold, daring, and experimental acts. If you’ve got talent and want to impress a crowd and have a good time — and don’t care about judges and scores – enter NYAF’s Cosplay Variety Show."

So I guess if you wanna do something totally ridiculous without the masq rules this is the place for you. And it's on a Friday. I'd like to do something Hetalia related but not by myself. xD

Anyone doing this?

Brand spanking new for 2009. I was inspired with what mangaNEXT did with their masquerade, and we needed a Friday night event. So there we go! It's also good for people who enjoy doing skits, but dont want to be overshadowed by the WCS!

Have they even decided if they are having the WCS at NYAF again this year?

Taken from the NYAF/NYCC company blog:

"As part of their prize, Laura Hale and Hannah McCue were presented with two tickets to NYAF along with a guaranteed place within NYAF's Masquerade. By taking part in NYAF's Masquerade, Laura and Hannah will be in the running for numerous prizes, chief among which being two tickets to Japan for the contest's winner."

Nothing set in stone at this point, but I wouldn't rule it out.

Could a skit be a dance? I might be able to convince my friend to do the Melencholy dance with me from The Melencholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. We would just need to practice a lot -.-U Thank god we'd have a couple of months to rehears it!

It can. If you were entering a Masquerade, I would recommend against it, because that dance is so old and overdone. On the other hand, since you are interested in the variety show and you won't be judged or scored, go for it, although some of your audience might still groan.

It's that overdone, really? NYAF will be my first con, so I'm not really sure about anything that goes on really. Thanks for the advice though

Truth be told, The Hari Hari Yuki was overplayed several cons ago. So yeah, you may wanna do your homework as far as skits go. If anything, check out the video section on American Cosplay Paradise, which can hopefully inspire you to try something else.

It's so strange seeing our names written out like that. My cousin and I entered Metrocon's contest for fun and we ended up winning a surprise trip to NYAF this year I've never been outside of Florida for a convention or ever been to New York, so I am super excited and grateful. But yeah, even though the blog doesn't specifically say so, they did tell us that we have "a guaranteed place in the WCS preliminaries". (http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=183328) So I am 99% sure that they will be having the WCS there. We are waiting for more info about it too though.

edit: Nevermind, no WCS preliminaries, but an amazing prize!: http://www.newyorkanimefestival.com/...ts/Masquerade/

To be more on topic, the Cosplay Variety Show is a great idea. I have never been to an event like it, so I plan on watching it

Thanks. I'm pretty pumped myself, as we already have Uncle Yo MCing/performing on stage that evening, plus several sound submissions already entered. Should be a hell of a night.

WOW this makes me so excited!! I was hoping to show a skit. But I was wondering wether it was a good idea to use the "internet is for porn" song from Avenue Q

But, I'm still looking fer a group to help me out with my skit... I just cannot find cosplayers willing to do it... ah well. X3 I have enough fun just walking around the convention recording randomness!!
