Fabric for costumes

FREE FABRIC!

I'll be giving away a bunch of fabric -- everything from cotton prints and solids, cotton knits, wool cotton and polyester blends, to fleece, yarn, velvet, burlap, denim, and canvas broadcloth.

Why? Because my mother's storage unit needs to be cleared out, and she has accumulated more fabric than she can use in the next twenty years.

Where? At Mikomicon, of course. In the auditorium building whose name I've forgotten. Same place everything else (except the bands) is happening at night, so you can just wander from one room to another.

When? 10:00 pm Friday and Saturday nights -- opposite the dance/rum party/after Masquerade/etc.

What's the catch? I ask that you write down your name, what city you live in, what fabric you've found that you can use, and what you think you'll use it for, on a slip of paper. Then I'll mail all those slips of paper to my mom, so she can see how people are moving forward and making things with the fabric she bought and stored.

You can also pose for a photo with the fabric, but if you're photo-shy that's optional. Again, I'm trying to show Mom how many people she's making happy by letting go of the fabric.

(I also urge you to wash any fabric you get, because even if it was washed before going into storage it's probably been sitting in less-than-ideal conditions for years and years. Dirt, cobwebs, and who knows what... wash it, you'll be happier.)

And when you finish your project, it would be great if you can send photos of the finished project to Jocelyn Baden, or wear it where she can see it. (She'll be working in the Costume Repair Station at the convention I'm running, in January at the LAX Marriott.)

Anyone interested in browsing? There's about thirty "bankers boxes" of fabric to see...

That is SUCH a cool idea Chaz! I'll definitely be there. I can never have too much fabric!

I apologize in advance if I clean you out of most of your stock. *wink* Just kidding! I'll save some for people, heehee~

I love browsing for fabric, so this is an awesome addition to MikomiCon!

Patterns too

Oh, and there are some vintage patterns, from the 1960s. If you're a small lady who likes the tv show MAD MEN and want to fit in with that look, we may have some patterns for you. By "small" I mean most of the patterns call for less than a 28" waist -- about what today we'd call sizes 6-12. (There's been some size inflation over the decades, so you have to check the measurements on the pattern rather than just relying on what it says the size is.)

Anyone interested in looking at these, too?

I believe everything that night is in the same building.

Well, it had to be said. I actually have met a few costumers who didn't care for their pictures to be posted online.

This is such a great idea! Very kind of you and your mother. I'll definitely take a look; you can never have too much fabric. :B I'll probably have some friends along with me, as well.

This is a wonderful idea. Thank you~ Are people encouraged(or discouraged) from bringing fabric they no longer need/desire to give away? If not, that was just an idea. Once again, Thank you so much for this opportunity~

That would be a question for the convention to answer -- I have no official standing with Mikomicon. I certainly have no objections, we just wouldn't send notes to my mother about the other fabric..

Boxes waiting to be loaded

This is most of the fabric boxes. There might be one or two more boxes in addition to the 27 you see here. (The big grey case on the left isn't coming.)

Yeah, keep doing that for a couple of decades and your children will end up doing what I'm doing here. One of the patterns that was snatched up at a previous give-away was one that my mother sent away for, when she was 18, and never made the dress. That was sixty years ago.
