how would i go about making the drill key from gurren lagann?
mainly out of wood would be nice

It looks just like a spinning top, doesn't it? You could just use one of those. Otherwise I would use a small rectangular block of wood and shape it on a lathe or belt sander. Very quick and easy.

I made a really nice one out of sculpey clay, you can find that at joann's
might be easier then doing it out of wood.
