Where the Wild Things Are costumes

What with the new movie coming out I figure people will be wanting to make some Where the Wild Things Are costumes! I am; for Halloween/the movie premiere I'll be making Max's wolf suit from the movie. I love how it's a little more modern/rugged than the one from the book.
Here's the pattern I'm going to be modifying, and here are some references!
And the trailers: trailer #1; trailer #2
The kid who plays Max is adorable!

Anyone brave enough to make a monster costume?

I think it'd be adorable if somebody did cosplay of a monster costume, and then had a little kid dress up as Max. I know I would squee so hard if I saw that.

If I had a 6 year old to dress up, I'd totally make them a Max costume.

I saw the preview for this when seeing a movie a couple weeks ago and loved the costume. I immediately wanted to make one and then forgot about it until this thread. Thanks for reminding me!

One of your pic links didn't work for me, so if either of these are repeats I'm sorry, but a couple more references:

Anybody know what material or whatever is used on the costume? It looks like carpet, haha, but I know it's not. I'm trying to find some one piece pajamas to use for the outfit.

I saw a couple of Maxes at Dragon Con, one of them didn't have the scepter which is shameful! I think some sort of fleece-like material would be your best bet. In the story it is supposed to be pajamas so something like that would seem like a good choice.

Dear lord, when I saw the trailer before 9 I seriously reverted to childhood and squealed in glee.I've always wanted a suit like Max.
If I ever spontaneously develop the ability,I WILL make a monster...I think I need to go consult the furries.

So I've started my Max costume =D I'm using this pattern I mentioned in my first post, modifying view "D" [the kitty]
For fabric, I was at Joanne's every week looking for the perfect fur material and couldn't find much. I was about to give up and go with fleece [not too bad, but it's not as fluffy as I'd like it], when I found this perfect white faux fur! It was the perfect length and everything.
However, in the movie he gets very dirty and it certainly shows on his outfit/pajamas/whatever they are xD I don't really want to go rolling around in dirt..so I think it'd be fine if I just went all nice and clean and white. Opinions?
Also, in the book his tail is much darker than the rest of the outfit, more of a blackish-gray. I can't really tell from the pictures/trailers if it's the same case..I already have the tail cut out of my white fur, and I don't know how much luck I'll have finding back-gray faux fur [I didn't see much when I was there, mostly beiges, browns, and blacks]. Anyone have any ideas on how I could make it blacker, or would it be fine if I just went white-tailed?

If you wanted to make it look dirty or dingey, I would try getting a small swatch of the fabric and lightly dying it with some brown dye. Do just a little bit and re-dye it more times if necessary to give it that "dirty" look, without actually making it brown. You can then use a paint brush or something and go over it with the diluted dye to make it look less uniform.

Same goes for the tail if you can't find any of the same fabric in the darker color, just get some black or grey dye and dye it lightly until you get a color you like.

When attempting to "dirty up" cosplays, I like using splattered coffee + old foundation.

Yeah, coffee and tea are also great dirtying agents.

well Max is pretty much done! I still need to add the whiskers [the wire idea I had didn't work too well, I might just go with pipe cleaners] and make the crown & scepter.
front

I'm so torn! I'm making Carol for 2010.

I more I study movie Carol compared to the original illustration the more inconsistent my costume plans are for him.

Lower half is scales

Lower half is feathers.
I wanted the merge the two styles but we go from lizard to bird is so random.

If push come to shove what version would you like to see?

First run Hybrid (I love the eyes) maybe the answer because her look like the illustration becomes real and it would be easier to see out of those eyes.

I like the feathers better, and the scales on the illustration COULD be feathers? xD
Bravo for making a Wild Thing costume! They're more recognizable..everyone at school/the Halloween parade thought I was a rabbit >__> I don't know why, rabbits don't habe long black tails XD

T think if your missing the crown it's possible to be mistaken. I was a MAX Saturday Night waiting for a shuttle bus since the subway line stopped early (the bus never came >_<). The person was wearing the crown which did make it more recognizable.
