i am a Christian Also, the first con i went to was PMX07 i wasnt thinking much bout how people were dressed ect, i was like WHoaoa cool.. but as time has gone on, going to AX and Comic-COn,other cons. i have seen alot more Cross-Play,gay-lesbain ect. im thinking to myself maybe i shouldnt be attending Con's anymore if there is more and more of this going on in the Cosplay community. i love everyone Equal - I am not someone who goes around saying your going to hell,i know everyone has a life to live,its just sad to see the wrong life they have chosen, but people do change thats why we cant Judge! Love Thy neighbor as thy self!

Well, I honestly don't think girls crossplaying as guys is too bad, since almost all girls wear pants already and most anime boys look like girls. But it does worry me when guys dress up as girls...

I really try to not just be like "You'll go to hell", but it's really hard when I know it's true about some people. And then when I try to talk to someone who's lost about God, they just blow up in my face like "Stop trying to convert me!" or "Well, that's just what YOU believe..." It's hard but hey, what are you gonna do.

I think in terms of crossplay, it's hard to define it by Deuteronomy standards. If I, as a girl, dressed and behaved like a guy to intentionally change my gender role and sexual identity in society, then yes, I would be immoral according to Deuteronomy. But crossplay for the sake of artistically recreating a character is no different than a girl portraying a male character in a stage production - no one is trying to mislead anyone, because it's understood as make-believe. To be honest, I don't know what to think about M>F crossplay. I don't like the idea that we hold this double standard about how girls can crossplay but guy's can't, but I also do find myself uncomfortable with the idea of guys dressing as girls. It could simply be a cultural stigma, what with the drag queen stereotype. But it's hard to see God's heart on the matter, because the Bible doesn't talk about issues of "make-believe" like cosplay or acting. But it's also true that God cares more about your heart than about what you wear on your body.

(It's also hard to make discernments on these things based only on one verse from the "Various Laws" section of Deuteronomy, because it's part of the old Jewish law. I believe Deuteronomy is in the Bible for a reason and should not be disregarded by any means, but Christ, in his perfection and sacrifice, has set us free from the Law.)

Anyway, I don't mean to start a debate on the issue, but it's been on my mind recently so I thought I'd organize my thoughts for you guys to read

wow, you make very many good points, and I pretty much agree with you ^_^ I am with you on the M>F thing too, now that I think about it. As long as they are not trying to actually become female, why have a double-standard? I mostly think that, as long as it's modest/apropriate, it shouldn't matter what people wear.

I'm a catholic-raised agnostic, however, I am sad at all the bad press christians get, not only in cosplay, but in life.
I think people need to see beyond the crazy evangicals, and notice the much larger percentage of not crazy people.

But anyway, I don't really belong here, at all.

I'm a Christian cosplayer too!

I get judged a lot at my school for loving anime (since it's a Christian private school), but I don't even care because I know God has a plan for me and He introduced me to the world of anime and cosplay for a reason... ^__^

Great thread guys! Thanks for contributing.

This whole debate has been on my mind for a long time now. I think that people tend to think that anime/cosplay and Christianity is irreconcilable because of what the common notion that Christians are very discriminatory and that anime/cosplay is wild. But let me tell you guys, I thought that cosplay was such a fun and expressive way to be creative and had no connotation whatsoever of it being something anti-christian. But then I went to a con. Then I went to internet chatrooms. When I discuss with athiests and non-christians I feel sometimes that I'm fighting not for Christ but for the sake of me wanting to like anime.

Some dark part of me thinks that I can't like anything that's not strictly Christian because Christian lives are meant to be devoted to serving God. But part of me also says that if God understands me more than my saintly mother does, that he'd understand that I like it because it's cool and creative, not because I'm rebelling against him (which some of it is). I don't really watch any of it that's grossly pornographic or violent although you gotta admit, the stylization of anime leans towards the avant garde. It's my life story guys, I'm studying to be an interpreter. For French. The French government at the least, and even some French people (of course not all) I've met are a pretty hard-core liberal group of people. Pro-gay marriage/lifestyle, pro-choice, militantly environmentalist and socialist (but let's not get into that). I want to be a pastoral and considerate Catholic, a witness to the love of Jesus, but I also want to be a just Catholic, whose not afraid to speak the truth and correct others when they are doing wrong.

For now the conclusion that I've come to from all this thinking and praying and research, is that I need to carry my own weight, let others carry theirs, and that I need to be more concerned about the lasting things instead of the temporal ones. There's things I am interested in life which definitely serves God, I love writing fiction where I'm excited to put those Christian themes out there and singing in church as well as for other events to put people at ease. But what about cosplay? It's so frivolous and focused about getting attention (or so it seems) that I don't even like it anymore sometimes.

I think I have a sick idea that to be a good Christian it needs to be painful and meaningful. I hope that's not true.

It just rubs salt in my wounds when you go some place like a con to have fun and relax, and you're met with hostility and arrogance. The culture I've met at Nandesukan turns me off very much.

I'm trying to figure out if I need to cut out everything that I am to be able to fulfill either role of cosplayer/anime fan or Catholic? Because "no man can serve to masters. He must either hate one and love the other, be attentive to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and Mammon"(Mat 6:24).

I know I sound like a total doubter right now, which I am. I'm a more well-read doubter which means I'm still seeking and I still offer my small prayers to Jesus. But I don't feel that it's right where I am right now. Hopefully you guys can offer me some advice. Maybe I'm just taking life to seriously. I take medicine for it already.
