Trying To Pick a First Cosplay

Hi all, I'm new to the forum and to cosplaying. I'm having issues finding a character though. I'm fat, 5'7, and the craftiest thing I have done is sewing holes in my breeches. I will have help on the cotume front once I decide what I want to do.

I was considering Alicia from Aria, Reki from Haibane Renmei, Haydee from Gankutsuou (might be a bitch to make), and Amamiya Yuuko from ef. And Hanekawa or Senjougahara from Bakemonogatari if I lengthened the skirt. Any input/suggestions are welcome...Have a couple pictures.

Do you have reference images of the chraracters you're considering? ^.^

The only one that rings familiar is Haydée, and I definitely would not recommend this as a "first cosplay" o_o More like... 20th or 30th cosplay, lol.

You look cute, btw, I really wouldn't call that fat o_o Where did you get that idea?!?

Haibane Renmei is probably a good choice for a first costume:

-nuetral, simple fabrics, straightforward patterns that can be made from other altered patterns or existing pieces of clothing.
-natural hair colors.
-a chance to play with a fun, basic prop (small wings)

Ahem, anyway!

I would probably go with Reki or Amamiya Yuuko. Then perhaps Alicia if you want to go a step further, since it looks a bit inbetween. I don't know these characters, I had to look them up lol but based on attires alone those seem decent. Haydee for sure, would be a toughie. Do something more simpler, so that you can enjoy the process first. If you do something too hard for the first time, it might be disheartening or discouraging.

Just do whatever you feel the most comfortable with overrall. If something challenging is too intimidating, then that is alright. Everyone has to start from somewhere! XD the more you learn, the more elaborate your cosplays will be on the long run.

Thanks everyone! I think I'm going to go with Reki then, and maybe do Alicia for 2011. I'm doing either Ennis or Isaac for a Baccano group, both seem fairly simple.
This is Reki for the record, I haven't decided which outfit I want to do though.
