Riku's vest is a pain in the butt, and was one of my least favorite things to sew ever, because it looks so deceptively simple at first. >XD
His actual vest has no seam in normal places like the side or back, for all the dozens of decorative seams...so to make a replica of the in-game model, you have to fit your mock-up to yourself pretty much perfectly before you start on the real one, since there's no editing afterward this way.
Here's the silly-looking pattern I came up with = http://www.flickr.com/photos/ensui/508478089/
If you want to save yourself some sanity/time and don't need obsessive accuracy (because I noticed later, no one can even really *see* any of the seams anyway) you could totally just mod out a pre-existing sensible pattern for an outerwear vest.

If you want to go the pleather route, I'd suggest the garment vinyl here = http://www.syfabrics.com/Browse.aspx/Clothing-PVC/224
Syfabrics stuff is soft and awesome to sew with (it's what everyone uses for making their Org coats pretty much) + they now have a proper pure white and not just off-white as a color choice.
