X-men cosplay- Magneto of X-3

I'm looking to do Magneto's costume from X-Men 3: The Last Stand. I've got the helmet, and roughly 10 m of 60" wide fabric to make the outfit, there's just some things I'm not sure of.

First of all, has anyone else here ever done this costume?
Second, I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out his cape/jacket. Is the cape permenantly attached to the jacket or held on with some sort of fastening?

FYI- I'm female, so this might come under the realm of crossplay, even if I don't attempt to hide the fact that I'm a lady.
If I can get this costume done in time, I am thinking it will be funny as heck to wear it to the annual Bridgewalk that takes place here every summer- one of our harbour's two suspension bridges is closed to traffic for a few hours, and us pedestrians get to have at it. In the past I've cosplayed at Bridgewalk as a Jedi and a Sith, Magneto should be a blast! And next time I visit San Francisco, I intend to take the costume with me, a pic of me on the Golden Gate wearing it should be priceless!

I kind of hesitate to use magnets on my costumes, because I carry my debit/credit cards when I'm out in public, as well as a camera- I'm not sure how much accidental contact it takes for a magnet to damage those, but I don't want to risk it. Getting a card replaced is a pain!
