Holy Roman Empire's Hat?
Does anyone know how to create such a hat? It's somewhat angular, like that of a pirate or Napoleon, but relatively geometric as well.
The Hat in question: (the hat of the boy in black) http://img.youtube.com/vi/GBYsh_Df5Fc/0.jpg http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs40/f/20..._mandachan.jpg

I'm not sure what its called but maybe you can use some wonderflex foam untill you get the right shape for it. ^o^

That sounds like a great idea. I'll have to look that up.

Here a Fosshape Tutorial used to replace felt hat. It's also a bit cheaper.

Thanks! I'm thinking of also trying some sort of interfacing to shape the hat, then some heavy fabric over it...?

I'm going to be cosplaying as War-Prussia, and since I'm on a tight budget (after spending about $80 on the fabric for his uniform DX ) I'm going to be making his hat using craft foam. So you could probably try making a base out of craft foam and then covering it with fabric (that's what I'm going to be doing for two other cosplay hats I have to make.) Craft foam is super cheap and if you need to shape it, just try using a heat gun (be very careful though because you don't want the foam to melt or start bubbling.)
This is a tutorial for making armor out of craft foam, but it will help you get the basic idea of how to work with foam: http://www.entropyhouse.com/penwiper...helmsdeep.html |

Im working on the same thing! I got a thick interfacing but its so hard to get it into the right shape, it winds up looking like a pope's hat XD anyone got a tactic for that? I bet it would help us both.

First off, have some geometry. Looks like a truncated cone to me, so if you can puzzle out the formulas involved you should be able to draft a pattern.
Once you've got your pattern traced out, you can copy it onto heavy-duty non-woven interfacing (brand name is Pellon) and iron that onto your fabric. You can do multiple layers of interfacing. For the crown you could probably steal one from an existing hat and cover it with whatever fabric you're using for the brim.

My friend who did HRE did the simplest thing which was:
1. Use tagboard and draft out the shape, it should be some form of a semi-circle. I don't have much of a picture to show you so it would require some experimenting on your own. You can tape a piece of tagboard around your head and experiment with a help from a friend >_> 2. Cut the same shape out of foam and then make a fabric case with seam allowance. Sew and flip inside out. Proceed to slide piece of foam into the fabric case. 3. Top stitch foam in place and add in your decorations if need to. At the ends you can just overlap the foam and top stitch and that will be the back of your hat (no one will really see it) 4. Cut out a piece of circular fabric bigger than your hat, it doesn't have to be a perfect circle as long as its bigger than your hat. You should serge the sides if you own a serger or hem the sides. Then hot glue it into the inside of your hat and that'll cover the top of your hat. This is a picture of how it came out. And its totally washable as long as you don't throw it into a washing machine. She was able to handwash it in the sink and hang it to dry. Hope this helps!

Here are the pattern peices that I found on anoter forum (the brim you can alter to your desired length).
Cut six of the round triangles and sew the sides RIGHT sides together (there are two sizes in the picture, but that doesn't really mater, you may have to alter it anyway--don't forget seam alowences!) For he brim, sew WRONG sides together to the base of the hat. Make a second one for facing. You can use the other ways, but i'm just posting this as another method for future HRE cosplayers. :3 http://www.teddy-talk.com/viewtopic.php?id=7199 |
