Finally, Soul Eater - Thompson Sisters Hat Tutorial/progress

ok so i hope i posted this in the right place
All comments welcome, and please, if you have an idea of doing this better, feel free to post it!!!

I am starting today to make Liz and Patty's Hats for a convention at the end of this month and I noticed no one has put into detail of how they made them so I figured I would document my progress and hopefully it can help others to make one for themselves!!

What you will need to make 1 HAT(i am updating this list as I go, if i find something works better)
1. Base Hat ( used Fedora style)
2. 1 Yard of Blue Fabric and 1 yard of white (extra for problem spots)
2. 1/2 yard of interfacing
3. Card Board & some stuffing(cotton)
4. Sewing Tools ( a machine or needle and thread for hand stitching)
5. scissors
6. Hot Glue and Glue Gun
7. White Craft Foam (1 Sheet should be enough)
8. Patience

DAY ONE:

Just FYI i am making 2 HATS
I bought 2 Straw Fedora Hats from Target ($3.00 a piece) to use as a base. looks something like this: this isnt exact one i bought

I bought 2 yards of blue and 2 yards of white cotton fabric (you can use something more expensive if you want) I also bought 1 yard of interfacing (a heavy weight that had a good stiffness) and a piece of cardboard for support on the sides of the hat, stuffing cotton for the top.

Got a big bag of glue sticks too and a sheet of white Craft Foam for the stitching on the hat

later tonight I will take photos of the patterns im using to cut and shape on the hats.

ok so i have some updates

DAY TWO
spent about 2 hours last night just planning on how i am to do this.

1. measure the height and length of your base hat and mark it on a piece of cardboard. draw the shape you need for the flaps of the hat and cut it out, this will be your example to work from.
step 1

2. lay down your innerfacing and trace out the shape (note if you fold your innerfacing in half you can cut both sides of the hat at once) cut it out. next cut two small post of cardboard (this is to add support to the flaps of the hat) hotglue them the the innerfacing, making sure that you do a right and left side and the cardboard is facing inward.
step 2

step 2

step 2

**these are just pinned to the hat, we will glue them after covering with fabric**

DAY TWO (continued*)

**take notes i am using the back side of the hat as the front **
3. use the cardboard example to trace on the white fabric, leaving about an inch around the shape so you can sew it and turn it inside out. then cut it out, you need 4 total (2 for each side) (if folded you can cut all your pieces at once)
step 3

4. measure the fron and back of the hat, and cut on the fold a strip for each that is wide enough to cover it once glued. it doesnt have to be perfect, just make sure it is a piece folded so you can use the fold so no seam will show in the front and back of the hat (the rim)
step 4

5. measure around the top portion of the hat, and then draw a rounded shape on the fold so we can sew a cover for the top of the hat. dont forget that crazy top part! make sure your cut is like photo 2 that the fold is in the right place because once we sew it together it is going to slip down on the hat like a pillow case would.
step 5
step 5

ok so thats all for day 2
more to come soon (starting on cutting the blue fabric and then some sewing)

so wherever i left off...

DAY 3:

6. sew the cut fabric shut and stuff the top portion of the hat so it is sturdy. Fit the pieces down over the side flaps and on the top of the hat, secure with hot glue. like this

step 6 progress

7. cover the front brim and the rest of the hat with strips of the white fabric. make sure you fold under the non, sewn edges so that it looks cleaner and you dont have stray threads.

8. I changed and used blue foam and white foam for the designs on the hat. use the cardboard templete to cut out foam pieces in blue (2 for each side) and then cut them down smaller so they will allow white to show around the side of the hat. do the same for the band of the hat. hot glue it on! it held up very niceley.
step 8

9. add the white strips (cut small we used about 8 on each flap and 20 around the hat)
glue them to the hat at an angel to looks like stitching.
let it dry before putting it on
step 9

10. rock out in your new Liz/Patty Hat!
step 10
