Turns out the guy who won "who wants to be a superhero" is going to be there in a super amazing Scorpion (Spider-man villain) costume! Saturday is Free Comic Book Day when participating comic book shops across the country give away this iconic form of American art. "It's our chance to bring some excitement about comic books to the general masses," said Chris Brady, owner of 4 Color Fantasies in Rancho Cucamonga. "We want to remind people that comic books are still here, they're affordable and they're still fun." Brady hosts one of the area's largest celebrations that spills out of his store and into the parking lot. Besides giving away between eight and 10 popular comic books he will provide food, a bounce house, costumed comic-book characters, writers, artists and publishers. Just a few of the big names who will be at 4 Color Fantasies to greet fans and sign comic books are Mark Waid of Boom! Studios, who has written for such titles as "The Flash" and "Captain America," Philip Tan, known for his work on "Spawn," "Uncanny X-Men" and "Iron Man," and Whilce Portacio, who has worked on such titles as "The Punisher" and "X-Factor." "I pursued these guys to get them here," Brady said. "I'm hoping to draw people here and let them come and meet, talk to and get autographs from big names in the industry that they know and admire. This is our way of giving back to the community." 4 Color Fantasies opened five years ago on Free Comic Book Day and the event has drawn bigger Advertisement crowds to the store each year. Brady expects between 2,000 and 2,200 in attendance and plans to give away more than 10,000 comic books - including Waid's newest work, "Incorruptible," a War Machine game piece "hero clix" and several kid-friendly comic books - while supplies last. The comic store features several genres of this brand of pop culture including mainstream and indie comics, graphic novels, toys, DVDs, T-shirts, models and statues, trading cards (non-sport), role-play games and a large gaming table for in-shop play. Brady said, "If you want your kids to read, give them a comic book. There have been studies done that say children who read comic books read at a higher grade level and have better reading comprehension." __________________
