How to dye nylon/lycra/spandex material??

I probably won't do this cosplay for a loooooong time, considering I lack the time and skills and money, but I thought I would ask anyways. I am interested in making a Jenova cosplay and wearing a nylon/lycra/spandex-material body suit for it. I found a good one that is white and says it can be dyed (I would prefer buying a white one to dye so that I can make it the "right color") However I have a questions about dyeing it.

1.)I've never dyed anything before, any tips?
2.)Would normal dye work? (RIT dye, Dylon dye, etc.) Or would I need something special for nylon/lycra/spandex material?

Here is the suit if anyone wants to see it. (the first one)

Thanks

Nylon/lycra actually dyes very well with normal dye; you just have to simmer it on the stove and make sure to stir constantly with enough water in the dyebath that the garment can swish around freely.

Oh thank you! I wandered into this thread dreading seeing a lot of nos But Sarcasm knows true

Nylon reacts like a protein fibre to dyes so pretty much how you dye wool and silk is how you dye Nylon I dyed a nylon lycra bodysuit for a Poison Ivy costume eleven years ago and I even manage to ombre dye it (shading from pale green to dark green) on the stove top
You can cool water dye it but it will tend to come out paler, like with silk and wool.

So yes this means you can dye nylon stockings/pantihose to match as well I also buy dancers tights and strip the colour out to get closer to my skin tone

Do you think this method would work for a nylon/spandex blend? I have to dye a leotard because they discontinued the flesh tone color

You should be able to--though the nylon and spandex behave differently. I found this page on dyeing stretchy fabric that might help.

When you say 'simmer', coud you explain the process of this. I am trying to make the Psylocke cosplay (dark purple) and I am thinking of getting a white cotton lycra leotard. The dyeing process is the same?
