Moe and Ecchi...does anyone actually like it?

K, so at my anime club, we just did a survey to see what everyone liked and disliked, and the entire, 75 + person club had this unanimous vote: NO ECCHI OR MOE! PLEASE!
They didn't even like K-On (2nd season.)

So...does ANYBODY actually like this stuff, or are companies just assuming people like it?

It depends...

I loved Koihime Musou, DearS, 11eyes, Chaos;Head, and Omamari Himari...And that was some heavy ecchi.

It depends. Really it does.

Moe? Ehh...Moe was okay.
I liked moetan, I guess.

Really, I don't mind it.
:/
Anime is anime, and I happen to love it all. xD;;

I think it's more like certain studios just assume everyone loves it.

I can't stand that garbage.

There's a big difference between moe and ecchi.

Moe is actually a countermovement to ecchi ~ its polar opposite.

The idea is to have young, cute characters showcased in a non-sexual way to appeal to the protective instincts in male viewers. Sort of like playing a dating sim as opposed to a porno game. Yes, both are about almost exclusively female casts and are aimed at the hearts (and wallets) of the same group of eternally pre-pubescent men. But equating one to the other really isn't fair to the fans of either.

As for my opinion of it: I find it no more or less despicable than harem, shounen action, shows designed to sell card games, Boys Love or most shoujo. Playing to what an audience wants is just saavy marketting. If you don't like it, don't watch it.

I like them both. I'm not too picky on content of the animes I watch, as long as they have a good story and characters I really don't care if it's moe, ecchi, shoujo, shounen, horror, whatever.

At the risk of being alienated as a pervert, I like alot of ecchi anime. I read and watched Video Girl Ai when it came out and It shows more breasts than a Swedish street flasher.

I also liked Mahoromatic and again alot of fan service and really really disturbing scenes with the 12 year old girl

...

If I'm reading the above comment correctly, that is an example of an anime fan who scares me.

I don't believe anyone equivocated one to the other, nor has anyone claimed that they are similar. They are included in the same post because my anime club specifically wrote on their surveys, "No moe or ecchi!" (and do note that they used "or" instead of a slash, which would indicate that they thought they were the same sort of thing.)

And this is not about my personal preference, or whether or not it should exist or be watched. This is just a survey to see if people actually like either of these two types of anime.

So, for survey purposes, I should count you as neutral, I suppose?

There needs to be less. But it's not due to content.

It's a problem that 80% of this season's anime applies to a fetishist audience. There are no good stories or characters in these shows, it's simply about what situations nudity or sexual overtones can be presented. I remember back in the day, maybe 2 shows a season were ecchi, now most of them are. This means that anime is no longer a place for diverse stories with interesting backgrounds that we may not be familiar with. It means that anime is becoming a place for obseen amounts of ass and titties. That is a problem.

I'm not saying they should be eliminated, I'm just saying, scale it down a bit. Give scripts that have actual merit beyond X number of pantyshots per minute a chance. At the same time, I also want to see a significant decrease in the number of yaoi/shonen-ai shows for the same reason. The plots are all the same, paper thin and deathly weak, serving only to place pretty males in compromising situations. I'm not saying get rid of them altogether, but I'm saying scale it back for something that's far more beneficial to the medium.

I don't think you need to explicitly equate them: including them as a set in a negatively-skewed questionairre implies that they have a connection as "undesireable". It may not be an intentional connection ~ but it's there.

Example:

Question phrasing one ~ "Do you like moe?" "Do you like ecchi?"
(low implied connection, no bias)

*inclusion of other genres would make the connection even lower.

Question phrasing two ~ "Everyone hates moe and ecchi. Do you hate moe and ecchi, too?"
(strong implied connection, negative bias)

Question phrasing three ~ "Everyone loves moe and ecchi. Do you love moe and ecchi, too?"
(strong implied connection, positive bias)

I don't agree that the connection, even implied, is deserved. That's all.

Few animes which had ecchi were really ever worth it in my honest opinion. About the only one I can remember is Oh, My Buddha. I earnestly laughed out loud a little while watching that show. Also, there was that one show from the 90s which I can't remember which did it well. Other than that, ecchi and moe are a drain on anime!
