Views On Anime Next
I went on Saturday, so here's my 2 cents ^_^
Eh... $30 for one day for a small con... eh... a little too much.. but hey, what do I know. Anyway... Hm.. first of all their first 2 video rooms were a fair size but the others were just... eh... small, but I guess not a lot of people really wanted to watch anime... Most of the stuff they showed were already shown at Otakon and AXNY. The panel room and video rooms were kinda chilly.... I got Kia's Signature!! ^_^ Anyway, the game room had a variety of games so it was fun... but I hated the Red Octane pads for DDR, they are TOO thick<--- really reduces a person's speed and they break too easily.... Now, the Dealer's Room: 10,000 square feet doesn't mean anything... The Dealer's Room sounds big but it was still kinda small. They had the usual Con merchandise. Prices varied but they were considered good. I didn't get to see the industry panels so I don't have any comments about it. The Masquerade was... eck.. I didn't like it. There were too little people that participated... And they didn't give the winning contestants any good prizes... All they gave were some Pocky and 2 DVD sets out.... And personally, I felt that they didn't choose the right winners.... -_- Unfortunately, I had a buddy that had to get home early so I didn't get to see the Karaoke after the Masquerade, so my 2 cents ends here. So what are your views about Anime Next???

You did go? I didn't see you... Didn't you say you were gonna stalk me or something like that? >.>
Anyway. It just plain ruled. My first small con, this was. And I loved it. I knew so many people. And I've gotten so many hugs, never have I felt so loved XD Those 'red octane' pads... were two konami pads stacked together. That made for some buttons messing up alot... But I still kicked ass in it; and I even was complimented by Jamie McGonnigal (sp?) !! The game room had a really nice spread of games. Shit, they even had Bomberman for Sega Saturn! I was playing that for a good hour. Though I was a little upset that all they could get for DDR was Konamix... I was hoping for MAX >.< The masquerade... well, three words: Random Conga Lines In other words, it was so loosely run that we coud do sporadic stuff like that, while still keeping organized. And Pocky is a great emcee =P Our skit ruled, even after altering it because our original GTO and Zell never showed up. We knew we wouldn't win anything, so we said 'fuck the judges, we're gonna give the fans something to remember' ...and... Carrie and Anna (Ellone and the SchoolGirl) did so very nicely... *cough*... We came, we gave fanservice, we offended. Does anybody else think the Magic Users Club skit was judged with wayy too much bias? e.e;; About those prizes: Remember, this is just a small con. If you get recognized for winning, more power to ya! But in the end it's just to have fun, not to win prizes, you gotta keep that in mind. And that makes four cents so far. Anybody else? |

I guess I should respond to this, since I was on staff.
There's not much I can say about the dealer's room or panels. BUT.. I can comment on the cosplay. Yes.. there weren't too many entries, which is why there weren't many prizes. We expected a small turnout. So that's why there were supposed to be no judges awards, since there were supposed to be 3 judges. Next thing you know 5 voice actors show up ready to judge. And they all wanted a judges award, even after I told them there was nothing to give. Myself and Maureen had made the trophies, and that's all that we were supposed to have. I'm sorry if you were unhappy with who won, but again, the majority of the winners were selected by the voice actors. I tried to run the show as best as I could, since it was my first time in that capacity of cosplay cordinator. Its not as easy as it may seem, especially wehn you're under the gun to get everything done, get everyone lined up and ready, AND start on time. -Laura AnimeNext's very tired, and thankfully not so stressed anymore Cosplay Cordinator. |

You said hi while walking past me, which confused the heck out of me just suddenly hearing "Hi Oshi" =P
Esmeralda: *applaud* You did a great job, really ^_^; We can't be upset with you for the winners, only the winners, since they... basically bribed their vote. Still, it was really good, and we all had alot of fun! ...and I reiterate, the blatent yuri from my group was not planned o_o;; Last edited by Oshi : 10-13-2002 at 07:29 PM. |

I thought overall AnimeNext was really fun! Like Oshi said, there were so many people we knew there, so it was like an AXNY/FF reunion ^^ I personally thought that Saturday was the BEST day!
But yeah... everybody was so nice! The voice actors were so kind and friendly and the staff were great!!! The Conga Line was the best part... LOL!!!! XD

I wish I had more of a choice on the judges, but most of the people I wanted to ask were either going to AnimeUSA, or were busy for the weekend. So the con chair said the guests would happily fill in. And even after I said 3.. and ONLY 3.. 5 show up, and he told me just basically to let them do it. Which myself, and my co-cordinator were pretty pissed off about. The VA's were nice people.. but I dunno. Same for Steve. Nice guy.. but well.. I would have prefered more people from the cosplay community. Blah.. hopefully next year.
Oh yeah.. DUH! Congrats to everyone who did win. Sorry there weren't better awards, but they gave me no budget. But all of the skits were great, and the audience really seemed to be behind you guys. And yeah \o/ for Conga.. bah.. you guys should have wound it across the stage. -Laura No.. I'm not a bitch all the time, only about 65%

Oh my, looks like you guys had a good time. The conga line is hilarious. And Oshi, I was looking at Fansview and was cracking up just looking at the pics of your skit. Wish I would have seen in it person XD.

Don't worry Emeralda, we're not upset at you for how the judging went down, and at the very least I'm not bitter about it. I still had a lot of fun getting on stage a lot sooner than I thought I ever would. I can't wait to do it again next year.

Oshi: contrary to what your group was told... I am completely fine with the Yuri! After the cosplay Pocky pulled me over where Anne.. err.. I think it was Anne.. was, and she apologized. I told her it was fine, not to worry about it. Heck, it was so quick I didn't notice it... but if I had.. well hey.. there were other kisses in the cosplay, so what's one more?
Heh.. thanks for the applaud as well. Sorry we didn't get to spend more time with everyone during the craftsmanship judging part, since Mo and I were constantly getting pulled away by tech crew, intterupted by people wandering in, and just stuff in general. We were very impressed with you Seifer coat as well, since you went the extra step and lined it. It came out really well. -Laura who really .. really should be in bed after no sleep >.>

Well here I am. After a long grueling commute BACK to NYC and a 6 hour work shift...
The judging was BS. I'm sorry, but that Magic User's Club did that same damn skit at Animazement and Shoujocon! Bad enough that said friggin judge played friggin favorites! But on the good side, NYO! Cosplay did walk away with 4 awards! ![]()

Wow, thanks alot Em ^_^; I'm glad you liked it! Concurrent with Ranma... the MUC skit won through nepotism (sp?) and bribery. I mean, you saw how much... that was Jamie McGonnigal, right? How much he loved that staff they gave him. Last edited by Oshi : 10-13-2002 at 10:33 PM. |
