How to highlight (or streak) a wig

I wanted to know how you could high light a wig.

I plan on doing a gatomon cosplay and using a long wig and putting purple streaks in it

How could I do that?

What's the base color of the wig?

Gatomon sounds like the wig would be white with purple streaks, maybe? In that case, wig dye. (Just browse the various wig-dyeing threads on the forums.)

You can't dye a wig a lighter shade, however, so if you want to put light highlights in a dark wig, you'll need to sew in extra wefts or loose extensions (for the skin top area.)

I actually have a follow up to this...

I have a white wig that I want to streak with black/gray, to add some variance. Many, many years ago, I used a hair rinse (like you find at Wal-Mart, etc.) and streaked a wig, and it seemed to work well. But I honestly don't remember if it came off on the costume or not, or had any other problems (this was over 10 years ago).

Would you still recommend using wig dye, or does this technique work just as well? And for the streaking, just dip a comb into the stuff, and run it through the wig, right?

Nothing meant for human hair will work on a wig (except hairspray^^)

Spray on the dye, brush it in, blow dry until the dye is set. Rinse the wig and let it air dry. (For clearly defined streaks, you'll want to section off the strands and separate them with aluminium foil or the like; but for natural-looking highlights, just spray on the dye from top to bottom and distribute it with a brush.)
