Exclamation Warhammer 40,000

In the grim darkness of the far future, there are only costumes!

In this thread we chat about WH40K costumes; trade tips on construction; post progress and receive encouragement; show off completed costumes; and even schedule gatherings at various cons. I will keep this head post updated with useful links and information.

Introduction:
Warhammer 40,000 (also WH40000, WH40K, or just 40K) is a sci-fi universe where the galaxy is constantly torn by war between many powerful factions. Robot zombies, demons, genetically-engineered super-soldiers, space elves, hive-minded insects, giant robots, and orks clash with a variety of chunky and intimidating weapons. The various units are highly customizable, with different color schemes and weapons, so options for costumes are almost limitless.

The factions:
Space Marines: The elite heroes of the universe. Super-soldiers in power armor
Imperial Guard: Millions of average Joes pressed into combat by cruel officers, like in World War One.
Sisters of Battle: Nuns with guns. Female Space Marines.
Inquisition: The secret police, bent on uncovering and eliminating treachery.
Chaos: Evil Space Marines and Demons.
Necrons: Robot zombies bent on the destruction of all life.
Tyranids: Giant insects bent on eating all life. Totally not the Zerg.
Eldar: Ancient, psychic, snooty. Elves in space.
Dark Eldar: Goth Elves in space.
Orks: Orks iz made for fightin' and winnin'!
Tau: Idealistic youngsters fight with big guns and giant robots. Just like anime!

Reference:
Games Workshop: Browse the website of the creators of WH40K and see at least one picture of every miniature.
Cool Mini Or Not: thousands of miniatures painted by hundreds of painters. Search for your favorite and be inspired by different color schemes and conversions.
Warhammer 40 Wiki: Lots of information about everything 40K. Not many pictures.
List of Space Marine Chapters: Over 200 emblems and color schemes.
Imperial Guard Regiments: Descriptions of the most notable regiments.
LexicanumLots of information about the WH40K universe and pictures of miniatures.

The list isn't that complete. I have found quite a few more costumes photographed in passing at various cons, like this Firewarrior, that have no further information about the costume or the person inside it. Also, the list is incomplete because I had not added my Vindicare Assassin.

Figured since this is the new 40k thread, I'd carry my reply over into this one...

Thanks for the critique! Actually a good deal of what you mentioned had crossed my mind already, but due to time constraints for taking it out for the holiday weekend I figured it might be best to worry about some of the details later (especially extensive distressing of the pleather). Hopefully once the holiday has settled down, I can reply in a more timely fashion as well!

SvK, once I get my gallery put together on here, think we can get a mention for the forces of Chaos in the OP?

SvK Perfect work on your index of Warhammer 40K and thanks for adding me to the list. There is also a Warhammer Group called www.bolterandchainsword.com but they are more towards gaming but there is a ton of refrences in thier forums. This has been added to my favorites list and if anyone ever needs help with my files feel free to PM me with questions.

I could'nt get my edit button to work so sorry for the double post. Me and a friend will be making a Space Marine debut at All-Con 2010 in March in Texas in our custom Space Marine suits and of course we are making both suits using Pepakura. I will also be teaching a class there at the same time at the convention and if you like SvK you can add my personal Space Marine site to your list www.spartansofplunder.webs.com

Out of curiosity, if one had a Space Marine costume, what kind of conventions would you take it to? All the conventions in the white dwarf magazine are just big tournaments...

I finally got off my tail and got around to getting up an image gallery of the Herald of Chaos costume I've been working on this year. For anyone interested, it's up on my profile - apologies for not linking it in the thread, but apparently every time I do, my post gets nabbed by the site spam filter (also apologies if I have like crazy duplication of posts popping up later ).

I ended up doing two chainswords for this one as the first was a bit bulkier and heavier than I would've liked and I wanted to try using a few different techniques on the second one. The bolt pistol I'm not entirely happy with as a finished product, but I wanted something that looked kinda gothic/baroque in style on the gun, so in the end I went with "good enough." My next time around I'd probably try for something a little more realistic in the gun department.

I noticed in SvC's OP that there is a greater lack of Inquisitorial presence than I thought there would be, which I guess gives me more incentive to start thinking about an Inquisitor costume at this point.

Entice, I'd say you could take them to video game conventions, since the 40k universe is used so widely in a heap of games like Dawn of War. That way you could take them to normal video game conventions and games workshop style events Atleast that's what I hope to do with mine.

I've stopped playing GW games, but still love the art and I'd prefer to go to an anime/videogames convention rather than games day style events. Oh and I guess they count in comic books, since there are a few 40k ones :P but that may be stretching it. The 40k universe is in so many mediums, you could take it anywhere really.
