Well, I'm totally lost xD Help please? [Princess Dress]

Ok, so I decided for my next cosplay I want to be Charlotte from the Princess and the Frog.

(Sorry they aren't fullbody. Closest I could find ><)

But I'm basically a newbie when it comes to making my own stuff from scratch, so I have no idea where to start. What types of fabric would be good? I was thinking satin since it's shiny, but I don't really know many fabrics either xD And how do you make poofy princess-like dresses? And the poofy sleeves as well as getting the collar to stick up like that...Direction to good patterns or tutorials would be loved, as well as any other advice you might have. Thanks!

Well the first thing to do is find a hoopskirt, probably 5-6 hoops would be ideal for that HUGE exaggerated skirt. There are lots on ebay for fair prices with examples.

As for patterns these might be good starting points;

While satin might be used a lot in princess costumes, prom gowns, ect, it usually looks really cheap/costumey (like halloween innexpensive costumey) under harsh con lighting. So either get a good, mid to heavy weight satin with slight shine/reflectivity or go with something else.

Also, you may need to widen some of the skirt panels depending on which pattern you end up using as her skirt looks beyond wide. Beyond normal widths at least @__@. Though this isn't so hard to do, its usually just widening the triangle out a few extra degrees from the set waist points.

I'm definately going to shink the skirt xD I can't imagine being able to move in the full-sized one lol. The last pattern you posted is pretty much the size I imagined the skirt.

Thank you for all the info! Do you have any better suggestions for fabric choices? I'm trying to keep this relatively cheap though, so of course satin is the first thing that comes to mind >< (I know it'll be pretty pricey since there's so much to it, but yeah lol)

When it comes to fabric, if you still want to use a satin, then go with a dull satin. It has a sheen, but doesn't come across as super shiny in photographs like regular satin does. It's got a decent weight to it and holds a good shape, so you might want to look into that.

Casa satin (sold at Jo-Ann) is your best bet. It's a mid-priced fabric ($7 - 10/yard), has a good weight and isn't overly "shiny".

If ya go with satin, try a crepe back,. It's heavier, and has a ore matte sheen.

Stay the hell away from chareusse satin.

Also, jo-ann is having a sale on their casa satin...ya might wanna look into it.

Another thing with satin, is seams MUST be finished. I'm doing a princess Guinever (Code Geass) Cosplay with matte and crepe satin, and it ravels like all holy hell. Borrow a serger, or learn french seams.

French seams or rolled hems. Or simply zig-zag your edges after you stitch them.

I'm making the same dress for AZ 11'!! and I think we both have our work cut out for us. I haven't started mine yet so I can't give you any "well I did this" advise yet but as I go I would be more than happy to share experiances with you. I have however done a ton of research about the dress so let me know if you need anything!!
