This is good advice for many portraits, but keep in mind that sometimes symmetry can be a wonderful effect. Making the arms and legs balance a composition by doing the same on the left and right can be great too.

Wow, great tips! I have to confess I had sometimes come up with the "dead hand" on my pics!

Great little guide!
I couldn't improve on it, although it would be easier to view if you saved it as pdf. ![]() |

A very helpful tutorial! I'd already learned a lot of what you covered (mostly the hard way!), but I also learned some new things! Thank you!
I put it into PDF format, for if you'd rather read it that way, or even to print it out and take it with you to your shoot: http://www.mediafire.com/?r3150khjmdn5v63

This is a good tutorial. I'm terrible at posing since it's my first time cosplaying; last year I didn't expect people to take my picture and hug me. XD
When I saw the pictures of me posted up, and no offense the photos were a little sloppy but still good storing memories, I just hid in my embarressment. I had the lazy dead "pose" of me just standing there looking clueless. ![]()

Practice is a big thing. Just you you know where your body is, what a good smile feels like and how to stand. Practice in front of a full length mirror and when you get confident enough have a friend take your picture. Practice. Also I find tilting the head down just slightly and at an angle helps to make the eyes look open (if I don't my eyes look squinty). The "dead hand" thing can also be a problem. Props can give you something to pose and hold just don't let it overwhelm you. Also if you don't have a prop, hold on to something around you in the environment or yourself.

Read this guide abit and like what I am seeing. I usually expect cosplayers to have poses ready for me, but for the past year I find myself having to give direction a lot which is something i've adapted to.
