Taming the wild Punky

I have the exuberantly fluffy Punky XL/Tina Turner wig and need to wear a headband with it that sits just above the wig's hairline. However, because of the "tangling" at the roots, trying to headband this results in a large speedbump of wig above my forehead. Has anyone ever tried to undo this sort of tangling? If so, what methods worked for you? *goes back to trying to pick out the tangles with a chopstick*

You might try Katie Bair's method of pouring warm water over it. I've also heard that fabric softener can work to smooth out synthetic hair. I have the same wig, I think (the Punky XXL from Witchwigs) and it tangles really easily...gah.
