Civil War Era Fabric?

I'm working on a Jesse James costume, and I've done a fair amount of research on the fabrics I can use. There was A LOT of cotton and wool used back then, but I'm trying to decide how best to make his trench coat. I really don't wanna go the leather route, because that'd be too heavy to ever wear thanks to my living in southern California. Any ideas? If you have any other suggestions related to a Jesse James costume, they're MORE than welcome.

You might want to look at cotton duckcloth. It is more of a canvas type material. I recall something on the history channel about the old west mentioning it.
