Hmmm

I'm also trying to make a Sailor Mars outfit for next March, since I'm going to D-Con with friends as the Inner Senshi. It's going to be difficult as it will not only be our first time cosplaying, but also our first time making outfits! We wanted to do something that was recognisable the world over, but obviously a Sailor Scout outfit is quite difficult.

So I posted this on my facebook and then I realized I was an idiot and I should have posted it here first since it was a Sailor Moon thing.

I actually get to be Usagi for a large group. I'm so excited, I finally get to cosplay her!

But anyway. Its a casual group since we did the senshi last year, and alot of people are picking outfits besides the school uniform and I kinda wanted to as well, but its still an option. Here's the photo I made with the 4 variants I was looking at. I was wondering if you guys have any thoughts.

Usagi possibilities

This is for Katsucon this year, and 'm already in the process of making 3 other cosplays, but all of these seem to be quite easy.

The vote from facebook ended up being #3 with #2 being pretty close.

3 or 1. 3 is just very pretty, but I feel like 1 is a very "typical" Usagi "look".

Third one looks amazing and I've never seen anyone try it. Sadly I won't be able to see it for myself but I'm sure you'll wow everyone.

I'd still go with the school uniform, but if not I'd go with #2

I started something! Still not sure if this costume will actually get done ever, but I made a tiara (Sailor Jupiter, I at least made up my mind on that part!). It's 2 layers of craft foam with a 19g wire sandwiched in the middle. Chose those materials because, well, they were kickin' around my house

The gem isn't entirely accurate, but I loved it too much to not use it, and I'm doing a steampunk version anyway, so I'm taking artistic license already anyway.

Akane, I'm going to go with the masses and vote for 3 as well, it's so adorable!

Aurora, no worries! I totally understand how stressful and busy life can get, there's no rush!

It just occurred to me that it is now less than 2 weeks to the day until Christmas. Sometime before Christmas Eve I'm going to have to take a trip to get my accessories figured out. Last weekend I spent like 2 hours just staring at the various screenshots I have, trying to figure out what to do. I'm obsessed with crystal (seriously... shiiiinyyyyy...) and originally I was all gun-ho of trying to get see-through-ish stuff for everything, but the more I was looking at screenshots the more I realized how much I love the idea of consistency between all of Saturn's different accessories (earrings, broach, and choker).

So I'm thinking about trying to make my own stuff from Sculpey or something, and then painting everything to my liking. However, I've never done something on such a small scale before, nor have I used Sculpey (until earlier this morning I didn't realize that I could get this stuff in Canada). I've played with Crayola modeling clay when I was younger, for elementary school projects, and nothing ever turned out quite the way I had intended.

Plus, I'm nervous about making my own earrings. Given that these things would be going in my ears, I want them to be safe. I'm not allergic to any metal or anything, but still I don't want to put the wrong thing in my ears. Has anyone made their own earrings before? Is there anything I should look for/avoid when it comes to making my own earrings?

EDIT: The world of Sculpey is vast, and I know so little... I'm getting a bit overwhelmed with it :S

Provided that you don't have any allergies and your piercings are healed, unless it's horribly toxic or has chipping paint, there really isn't anything that can't go inside your ear piercings. It's not going inside you, it's going into a closed tube of skin. The earring findings at the craft store are probably about as safe as most store bought earrings: perfectly fine for most people, but unusable only to those with extreme allergies.

I would build the sculpy ear rings onto an existing pair of real earings or studs. The oven temp should be on the lowest setting to bake sculpey, and real earings are metal so they wont melt or anything. This way what you are putting in your ear is meant to be in there.
Same for broaches and stuff, I would fix them onto existing pin badges or donor broach metal fixings.
