I wish I could bake... or cook....

I generally just "burn food into a somewhat edible condition"

It's not hard to learn. It's a lot like Chem lab except it smells better and you get to eat it when the reaction is finished! Maybe ask your mom to help you with a couple of her/your favorite recipes.

I hate food.

I've always been a picky eater. And by picky, I mean once someone made a list on a piece of paper and a small pad of paper of the food I will eat and it filled up the front and half of the back. It dominates a good majority of my life and I feel extremely uncomfortable even talking about food. I have a phobia for trying new foods.

I always say I wish I could photosynthesize and I honestly mean that.

I'm not usually picky about what's in it, but I'm VERY fussy on how it's made/prepared. The texture in my mouth, the preparation method, and particularly, I'm very picky on what flavours combine and don't combine. E.G., I love potatoes. But cook them in a crock pot where they soak up all the meat and carrot juices and such so they don't taste like potatoes? Then they're absolutely disgusting to me. Corn's fine. But creamed corn? NO. Feels like I'm eating a bodily secretion.

Yeah I'm also the type who is really fussy about texture. I like all sorts of foods, but I'm picky when it comes to how it's prepared.. I mean, if it's a food I like I'll still eat it (usually, if it appears safe :P) but I won't be very impressed. I won't say anything normally... just won't be wolfing it down.

Like teriyaki sauce, for example... for some reason I've tasted so many icky teriyaki; I really prefer it to have a stronger sake and soy flavor with sweet undertones. Some teriyaki tastes like mandarin chicken from panda express, or like it has corn syrup in it or something D:> It should have body, but shouldn't be syrupy-gooey. And it's one of those things that I feel like I see it everywhere, when there are so many other kinds of foods that are better.

Tonight I'm just going to have quick oiled rice... just a little bit of peanut oil + garlic + lemon + anything else simmered in a pan and served over a bowl of hot steamy rice. It's so, so good. And lazy.

Oh, another good fast meal is my chicken soup... low sodium chicken broth (<100mg sodium) + soy sauce + sesame oil + sugar + beaten eggs + anything else. I always guesstimate measurements in my recipes/experiments, I just add things till it seems "right"

I would love to but my mom is half the country away. At least a three day drive.

For now it is instant food and whatever I can get someone else to make for me.

Get yourself a cookbook!
Or watch food network!
Look stuff up on the computor!
Call your mom and ask her for a recipe [with detailed instruction and google]!
EXPERIMENT!
But please, stop eating that prison food!

YA RLY. Cooking just takes some practice; if a lazy, careless, impatient person like me can do it, then probably just about anybody can do it. I tend to throw myself into advanced recipes head-on, but if you're all cautious about wasting a lot of time and money, which I am apparently not, start small. Read directions. Keep them on hand while you cook. Get your materials assembled before you start.

Try grilled cheese or quesadillas. Salads. Hamburgers. Tacos. Pasta. Cookies. Most steaks are actually not all that hard to cook if you review the process a little before you begin, if you're the type that likes steak. Try, try again.

Hrrrmmmm, probably a good idea to start learning to cook.

Probably healthier for me too.

This is what's for dinner at our house tonight. I add a bag of frozen mixed vegetables and some soy curls (we're vegetarian). Yum!

Oh... and for those who can't cook yet... get a rice cooker and/or a crock pot. All you have to do is follow the ingredient list (and you can use prepackaged rice mixes in a rice cooker), leave it alone for the proscribed amount of time, and you have yum.

I can also suggest the book "Help! My apartment has a kitchen!" for learning how to cook. Has a huge bunch of recipes from soups to dips to fish to vegetables, it's VERY easy to understand, and most of them are pretty easy to follow. Plus it's got "Mom" tips for things like hardboiling eggs, de-boning fish and such. My boyfriend, who I mentioned is a fantastic cook now, started by reading/using recipes from it. (Salmon quiche, Kung Pao chicken, cookies and biscotti, all learned from it.)

DEFINITELY healthier! And cheaper. It is more time consuming (though there are also lots of quick recipes), but you can always make extra and have it later. Many things freeze well.

Gonna toss this out and see if anyone bites. I keep hearing how kale is a wonder food - full of vitamins and blah, blah, blah. I love spinach and bok choy and cabbage. I even love brussel sprouts. But I have yet to make kale that is even edible. Seriously. I've tried it three different recipes and ended up just throwing all of them out. Which says something, because I hate to waste food. So - any suggestions for cooking kale?
