I haven't written in a while...

I just got a letter from a cute friend of mine in Japan. I'm a little scared to read so much of it but she's the kind of person that will set your heart on fire and then travel somewhere interesting in the meantime. She really likes English and simple art. Her writing is ridiculous and on a completely unrelated note, air mail is expensive. 110円? Really?

.......

Really? :/

I know I'll easily find something that interests her but what would you guys send to such a girl? It's just been so long since I've written letters that it makes me wonder what kind of things the rest of you like to send.

I find that the pen pals I've had like to be sent things that they can eat but can't find in their own country. It may be some tacky things but also some things that are nice. I send stereotypically British things like a good brand of tea (Fortnum and Mason), a few photographs of places near where I live and then something personal I think the other person would especially like depending on their hobby.

I live in the middle of nowhere but I'm all for shipping non-perishable goods if I can figure out what she would like. <3

It's common knowledge that everyone wants a taste of the other country and since several gaijin tend to pack certain goods they know they won't find in Japan, it's a given that some Japanese have a special fondness for foods they don't normally get the chance to have. Of course, I'm the only American friend she has so this either makes things really really easy or really really impossible.

Meh. :/

I don't know what they have in Japan but I know that Hersheys and Reese's Peanut butter cups always went down well with me! We can get them here but they're so damn expensive. American candy is sold at a premium here at specialist shops like Cyber Candy. It might be the same in Japan.

Hehe, Maybe they have them in Japan, but in the US we don't have certain delicious brands of candy.

Like macintosh toffee which is amazing but not sold here, Also Cadbury crunchie bars. Most of my family lives in Canada where they are available and send them to us for holidays. I completely second trying to find something like that to send her....but it is kinda tricky unless someone can tell you what is and isn't available in japan.

America doesn't have Crunchie bars? That's it. I can't ever live in the States.

I remember the time I found an Aero bar in the UK section at the grocery store, somehow the idea it had little air bubbles in it fascinates me to this day...

But I am going to jump on the wagon with "Send her American treats!" Perhaps something thats specific to your state? Like in Michigan we have Vernors ginger soda, Faygo, and Saunders hot fudge whereas when I lived in Texas they'd never heard of any of it and you couldn't find any of it or only in very limited quantities. I also plan to head up to Mackinaw Island to buy my friend in Orlando some 'for real' fudge ^^ she gets a kick out of us calling the tourists "fudgies" because they always come for the fudge.

Sounds like a good idea. I don't know anything specific to Washington though. Especially since I'm all about bitter foods and sweet liquids.

I like the candy idea though. We have Crunch bars here damnit! I just wish I could find Krackel like I used to. Lack of gourmet foods specific to Washington makes this a bit more difficult too.

Okay Vernors stays put because it generally sucks. When you get into ales and beers like Blenheim, Fentiman's, Cock N' Bull and Red Rock, you start to appreciate them a LOT more. Especially when you start to live here where none of them exist. The only reason your Faygo flies off the shelves so fast is because of all the grredy ICP weirdos hogging it all. It's a big bottle, a good cheap soda and I like it too. I can never get my hands on the Rock and Rye anymore so I've had to do without it.

Damn...All this talk about liquids is kind of making me relapse to my soda days. I should probably just send ginger chews or something. >.>''

Anything that says USA and/or has a flag, or anything that says or represents your state would be good. When I've traveled outside north america, I take little flags and things in red, white & blue, and give them to people that are nice to me. I went to Guangzhou in 2005 and had given some little flags on stands to some of the shopkeepers and when I was back a year later, they still had them sitting up in the shop. So, I think things like that often get a smile; they aren't things they'd get locally!
