What kind of shirt to use?

My plan is to cosplay Niholoid/Vocaloid Japan for the London MCM Expo this May.

I've done an original design, given that I had some major exams coming up, I'm essentially banned from undertaking massive sewing projects.
Here is what I came up with, with the help of another cosplayer.

I'm having some trouble over what type of shirt to use; I have to go with what I can buy in a shop, essentially, however, the average shirt is quite thin.

In addition, I'm uncertain over what to use to add the gold-ish trim on the sleeves and collar, the collar in particular.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I was going to suggest a button up t-shirt, but those are pretty thin huh? The gold trim, you could use bias tape! There would be a little sewing involved but nothing too big. Joann's sells bias tape in a bunch of colors, so I'm sure they have gold.

Since I live in the UK, I'll probably have to rely on what's available in the local sewing shops ^¬^"

One problem I'll probably run into is how to achieve the loops on the sleeves. I looked up the version on Japan's naval uniform, and I believe it's called an 'executive curl', but I have no idea about how to make one?
