Thanks so much for this tutorial! I used it to make an Evoker and Yazoo's gun from Final Fantasy, here are the results: http://shadowyazoo.deviantart.com/#/d4600hf.

hey so i sanded the knife i made right..after i used gesso (which u [op] said works in place of the paste) and no matter how much i sand it, it wont look like a solid flat surface. am i doing something wrong here? i used the paint scraper to apply the gesso evenly as possible, obviously theres going to be bumped areas and dripping that need to be sanded down, and i can get them down but the surface still looks horrible..heres a pic of what it looks like after i painted it..

as u can clearly see, it looks like shit lol do i just need to sanf HARDER or longer or what..i sat for a good half hour - 45 min sanding it..is that too short of time?? most time was spent trying to get it all to look like one surface without the layerd look..any thoughts?

I really recommend spackling paste because you get a nicer finish with less coats and less sanding.
I never said gesso would give the same results as the spackling paste. I stand by my statement that gesso can be sanded, but you'll notice that I said I can't promise what type of results you'll get with gesso.

Anyway, from looking at your picture I'd say you simply need more layers of gesso, especially to fill the creases and once it's dry sand it some more. Even after one more coat of gesso, you might still need to add more coats. With the spackling paste I had to add many coats too. The paper mache doesn't create a perfectly smooth surface.

Still working on mine, papier mached this morning. Next step is spackle, of course. So far, it's turning out really well. I'm taking pictures to document.
