And hello everyone! I'm getting ready to start a Magical Girl Mami costume, and I'm super excited, but I'm a little confused on the skirt at the moment. I'm not sure whether to make it a regular circle skirt, or a 1 1/2 or two circle skirt. I want it to have the same volume as it does on the show (I plan on putting horse hair braid in the hem to help achieve that), but I don't know if a regular circle skirt will be enough. Any ideas?

oreburgh: If you want people to recognize you, I'd say go with her school uniform if you don't want to do her Magical Girl outfit. But If you find an outfit she wears that you really like, who cares if people recognize you or not? Cosplay what you want to cosplay.

Ichigo: Did you gather the skirt, or did you just do a regular two circle skirt? And do you think two would be too much if I'm doing the horse hair?

Mine ended up being about 1 3/4 circles. I actually found that bias tape was a huuuuge help in aiding the floof. I made my own bias tape and that made the folds fluff out a little on their own

Then I added a mini petticoat, and I'm pretty satisfied with the shape. It's a little messy in the front here, but I was more concerned with capturing the fluff!

So basically, the bias tape I made helped the ends keep their curves kind of like how horse hair braid would, and the petticoat assisted with the poof. It works for me, but everyone has different success stories, and a lot of it depends on how you interpret the shape of her skirt, since there's a lot of discrepancy between references hahaha!

I think the suggestion of doing the school uniform is a good idea. If you really want to do her in casual clothes maybe you could carry around a Kyubey plushie.

Yes! I had to gather it since I literally made 2 circle skirts, slit them down the middle, and joined them back together into 1 (after trimming off about a quarter of one of the skirts, hence ending up with a 1 3/4 circle skirt!)

Now I didn't use 4 circles, but I followed the same kind of concept! Especially the bit about not having the ruffles extend all the way up, since it's going under a corset and you don't want any bulk under a corset if you can help it. And horse hair braid could certainly help with the shape of it, as demonstrated in that blog post. It kind of depends on the fabric your using. My skirt and bias tape are both made out of kona cotton, and it holds up pretty nicely on it's own, so I skipped the horse hair braid.

So I was looking up pictures of Goddess Madoka and saw a picture of her with Homura's red ribbon tied to her bow(her weapon) I was thinking of doing that for my cosplay. Should I do it? Or no? What do you guys think?

If you have a tucker waist (not a skinny one like the link kristaaah posted) I had to do a gathered circles skirt instead for Mami as the circumference didn't produce enough ruffle on it's own. So I basically double up the diameter.
