The topic of the next paper I have to write for my English class is a compare/contrast essay on Japanese manga vs American comic books. So I thought I'd ask you lovely people here on cosplay.com.

I'd love to hear your opinions, and maybe a bit of friendly debate. Here's a few starter questions :
1. Why do people read manga.
2. Why do people read comic books.
3. Why do people who don't like books (or think they're boring) enjoy manga and/or comic books?
4. What is the apparent difference between the two, in your opinion?

Noia, I was a teacher. Actual classroom and everything. I want to let you know now before it turns into a habit that "ask the internet" is not a valid avenue of research.

Not really even for personal opinions, I'm sorry to say. You can cite "personal communication" as a source, but you'll need a real name and a reason why that person's opinion should mean anything.

And if this isn't the sort of paper where you need to cite sources, basing any argument or theory on the words of random internet strangers is still a pretty bad idea. It'll show in the finished work.

ALL THAT SAID, it's a cool topic and I know you can whip something out that will be more interesting than most of the ones I had to grade. Good luck.

My mom is a research librarian at a college (and professor of library sciences) so I pretty much have to agree here. If you're supposed to interview someone, I'd suggest going to a local comic book store or anime/graphic novel club at school or something. Don't ask a bunch of faceless trolls on the internet.

My theory is manga= Japanese comic books, comic books= American comic books.
People read them because they like them.
They have pictures.
Manga has more disoriented and unrealistic proportions in their drawings, in comic books they look more realistic.

Not necessarily, just so you know. Come on; let's be honest, here. Comics are comics. You can argue all day long that Japanese comics are special because they come from Japan, but they're still comics.
