Some of you might be aware of the Tokyo metropolitan government's passing of an indecency law affecting the manga industry (especially those featuring school-age characters or homosexuals) disproportionately while failing to regulate other mediums like softcore porn featuring real children. As a result of this law's passing and the huge affect it could have on manga without clear wording and even enforcement, 10 major comic publishers, including Kadokawa Shoten, will not take part in TAF this year (as it is a government sponsored trade event).

http://sgcafe.com/2010/12/kadokawa-a...ng-of-the-end/

This is something to consider before deciding to attend.

This law has got everyone antsy. TAF has been chosen as something of a symbolic stand. Not attending is a wonderful way to show your support.

If you aren't particularly concerned about the law, no worries Enjoy. But read up on what's going on before making a decision.

Thanks Tsumanne! I was wondering the same thing as kiratsuki, here is another news link about the boycott issue.

The article mentions that the major anime companies and others will be organizing a different event, "Anime Contents Expo" on the same weekend at Makuhari Messe. Here is a link to the event home page.

The English side of the homepage is minimal on information but the Japanese side has a cosplay link containing the rules and stuff. It looks like they will have changing areas that cost 500 yen but no cloak area so they ask you to take care of your belongings. No military uniforms (Sorry T).

It'll be a stretch from Osaka the weekend before so I'm not sure about either events for me.

Oh hey! Snap!

And there's cosplay too!

I sincerely hope Tokyo's governor makes another appearance in the cosplay hiroba... ^^

Good thing I posted this then, wouldn't have known otherwise. I'm sure it'll be first news about the boycott to others as well.

I'll check into Anime Contents Expo and possibly go to that instead.

Edited original post to reflect the boycott. Although I was aware of the proposed law, I hadn't heard about there being a boycott of TAF to protest it. I'll be attending Anime Contents Expo instead.

Talking with a Japanese friend about this now.

He says y'all rock for supporting the cause ^^/

He also says the Tokyo governor is a senile old homophobe and xenophobe with a history of writing his own novels involving the rape of minors. He has called Nanking a "fiction" and helped write the fantabulously xenophobic right-wing essay: "The Japan That Can Say No".

Classy guy! Better to enjoy a day celebrating our "warped DNA" at an event he has nothing to do with ^___~

Wow that Ishihara sounds like a *fabulous* guy. Pssshhhh. Does he not sound somewhat similar to Bin Laden? (for those who dont know, Bin Laden conveniently enough before deciding to become a cleric with a total extremist view was a rather well known sado hedonist for the earlier parts of his life) in other words, all credibility just got thrown out the window.

Anyway, I will be happy to attendanime contents expo with you Tsumanne if you dont mind a person tagging along =)

Im almost done with my Sakura Taisen Imperial Uniform and would to show it off ^^

Sakura Taisen for the win! Sure, same meeting place as Wonder Festival work for ya? Anime Contents Expo is open from 9:00am-6:00pm so I'm not too worried about getting there at the crack of dawn. Thinking of getting there 10:00-11:00ish to avoid the line while still being early enough to score free goodies.

Saturday - Anime Contents Expo
Sunday - Cosplay Tea
A beautiful weekend of dorkness lol

Ishihara will no doubt use the crisis to deflect flagging attendence and divert attention from the boycott and the issue that spawned it.

Screw that man and his luck.

I can only hope he continues to say hateful, misguided things about the people victimized in the earthquake and that the residents of Tokyo begin to pay attention. He's already called the crisis "punishment from heaven".

I don't know if the events are going forward, but at this rate, I suspect even if they move forward: international press will not attend, making both more or less pointless from a business perspective.

On checking the websites:

Anime Contents offers their condolences to the victims and is currently discussing the matter, seemingly to decide if the event will go on or not. There is no information about the earthquake or adjustments for it on the TAF site in either Japanese or English.
