Lightbulb Can Video Games be Addicting?

I logged on to yahoo and I saw this article that read "Scientists say that video games can be addicting". Whats your opinion? I say they can, I for instance won't take a shower all day if I'm immersed in a really good game and sometimes I won't eat either. BUt the next day I always make sure that I shower and eat sumthin. Also I have to work AND go to skool, so I can't spend every waking moment playing video games. But I don't think anyone would actually go to the lengths to harm themselves by not eating or anything from playing a video game, that's just dumb.

Off subject, you know that feeling you get, when you've been anticipating a video game coming out and then you finally get it and all you wanna do is go home and play it for like hours on end? I used to get that, for like every game I bought, and if I didn't go directly home and play it I would get annoyed and un-pleasant. Well thankfully I've "Matured" a little bit and that no longer happens........

But yeah here's the article.......

Happens with me still. I get a new game, i play it to death for awhile before I move to some my other titles, then come back to it at a later date and continue where I left off.

Yeah a lot of games are addictive, mostly RPGs and MMORPGs. Games like those truly only end when the user feels like they don't want to play anymore and sometimes that can be for a long long time.

yeah, i see them being pretty addicting..and certian things do different things to different people. Like those couple of Koreans that died in the videogame cafes a whiles back, after stayiing playing the games for over day's of time.
I know I've done things like skip class for a launch day and when I get a game I've been looking forward to for a long time, its takes up so much of my time, but I actually tested myself and gave them up for a month w/ no prob...so no major addiction here. ^_^

I did a recent English paper on this topic and got an A for it: YES IT IS. Video Games rob your money, social time and sometimes schoolwork depending on how obsessive a Gamer is. I am an example of it (money being invested in DDR equipment, arcade machines, Gamestop... I perfer to hang w/ people interested in video games... etc.)

Yes. I'd like to see someone argue that they weren't.

People can be addicted to gambling. But I've never known anyone that was so obsessed with games that they were as bad off as a compulsive gambler.

Of course there is a difference between obsession and addiction. If someone lost a house or a car because of money they spent on games, that would be addiction. If you spend all your free time playing games, or just stayed up all night playing when you have to be at work/school then you're just obsessed.

*raises an eyebrow* "Scientific studies" like this are mostly by guys being financed by groups that are interested in having "scientific" evidence that matchs they're own views. The idea is that by having someone who is supposedly smarter than the rest of the population declare something everyone else will suddenly go, "Oh. Yeah." There are a lot of really stupid people out there....

Anyhow, of course some people can find video games to be addicting. You have to be a pretty dim bulb to not realize that anything can be addicting. *ponders* You'd probably have to be the person who would get addicted to something like that in the first place, really....
