Classic/Older Anime Fans?

I'm not extremely well versed in "classic"/older anime, but more so than others. I'm a huge Evangelion fan and my favorite anime is Kodocha which is from the 90's, along with some others. Most people my age won't even give older anime a shot. ("It looks gross!" That's called cels. They rock.)

I'd like to think that at least some people have seen, of all things, Evangelion, since it's supposed to be one of the best and most influential anime of all time, but after starting participation in this thread I've realized NO ONE KNOWS WHAT'S GOING ON. Maybe they've heard of Evangelion but never bothered to watch it because it's "old." I've gotten comments on this photo saying it's cute. IT'S NOT CUTE AT ALL. Sure, he's my boyfriend in real life, but it's based off of this scene. Asuka says, "Hey Shinji, let's kiss." When she actually does she nearly suffocates him and then goes to gargle mouth wash afterwards, all on the anniversary of Shinji's mom's death. There's absolutely no romantic connotation at all. [/rant]

And also, at my last convention my friends and I went to a panel called Classic Anime You Should Know. My boyfriend knew every single anime they mentioned. I felt super inferior...but that's not the point. Most of the audience was older, mostly young adult men. I felt like my friends and I were the only teenage girls in there that had actually seen some of the stuff they were talking about. There were a few Ouran cosplayers in the first row and their Nekozawa kept going, "I have no idea what you guys are talking about! " One of the guys running the panel got so pissed at her. :P

Don't get me wrong, I prefer today's animation over the 90's just as much as the next person, but is that really a reason to avoid a show? Too many anime fans (mostly the teenage ones) are avoiding those anime just because it looks "old" and it makes me sad because I used to be that way, too. But there's so much more variety if you open up your doors! What do you guys think?

Hmm so you think Anima from the 90s is old then what would you call the stuff from the 80s then

But really if you want to talk about Anima and were it is today then you have to start with two items first being AKIRA the ground breaking Movie from 1988 it is consider the first true Manga and even today is fun to watch. The other would be Starblazers which was the first series to have a wide appeal in the United States. Starblazers first came out in 1977 in Japan and in 1979 was re-worked into a US market it ran from 79-84 and is considered one of the most influential Anima Series to be produced.

Man, I think some of the older anime I've seen was Project A-ko, Robot Carnival, Nausicaa Valley of the Wind and Zillion.

When I was in Germany as a toddler, my parents recorded this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uI0tDLKj33g for me. That was back in...'83 '84 maybe?

That's...a really weird reason, but eh. Some of them will probably come around just like you did, either for variety or to gain more-obscure-than-thou bragging rights. Maybe they'll branch out after high school, when the endless parade of school-life dramas start to look less relevant and more monotonous. Maybe they'll get interested in it as an art form and want to see its roots. Maybe somebody will show them Urotsukidoji.

And if they don't...meh, I suppose? There's a lot of great older anime out there but the world's not going to end if most kids don't watch it. It's not as though they spend a lot of time watching movies that are 40 years old either.

I'm guilty of this... I'm actually quite fond of silent films, and black and white films(Nosferatu for one). I'm an oddball among my age group(17-18).

On to the subject of the thread, I actually watch more of the "old" anime than I do the modern day anime. A Wind Named Amnesia, Vampire Hunter D, Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Vandread, Slayers, and Trigun are some of my favorites...

I was really fond of Cyborg 009 as a kid. =/

Oh, I didn't mean to suggest that nobody did that! Oddly, you're watching Vampire Hunter D at the same time I did.

(I was watching Fritz the Cat and Crying Freeman in high school. Similarly anachronistic oddball here.)

I was watching anime when I didn't even know what the term anime meant! I thought they were just well drawn cartoons.

Gundam Wing
Samurai Pizza Cats
Ronin Warriors

^ Classic old school stuff.

People generally refer to the 90's as the Golden Age of Anime. That aside, I'm a fan of:

Gaogaigar
Shin Getter Robo
Gigantor
Dragonball
Evangelion
Pokemon (First Generation)
Cowboy Bebop

The only classic anime (apart from the obvious ones like DBZ and Cowboy Beboy) I can think of that I've enjoyed is Irresponsible Captain Taylor.

i love older stuff, even if it seems corny and badly dubbed by today's standards (because it's still hard for me to find older subbed anime)

ronin warriors
galaxy express and captain harlock
appleseed (the first one)
of course A LOT of '90s anime

I know, just thought I'd mention that I do those things. (:
I got into Vampire Hunter D my freshman year of highschool when my friend gave me the first volume of the novels for my birthday. She'd never read it, and thought I might like it-- which I did when I finally decided to read it. Now I've gotten her and a few other friends into the series-- and they agreed to cosplay from it with me which is a plus.

And yay for being oddballs.

I enjoy some of the older stuff too, though I think some might be earlier 2000s too ^^;; Evangelion, Trigun, Angelic Layer, Cardcaptor Sakura, Outlaw Star, Here is Greenwood (If anyone likes this one too, please tell me!) just to name a few. I was just re-watching the Oh My Goddess! OAV and I just bought Blue Seed so I need to watch that as well..

It's hard for me not to love older-ish anime. I grew up on a lot of older shows like Evangelion and Sailor Moon, not to mention Dragonball Z (never liked that one much, though), Pokemon, and Rave Master if I remember correctly. XD Not to mention I love series like Case Closed and Birdy the Mighty, etc...

It sucks that people would avoid an anime because it doesn't look pretty- or if they're like my friends, who believe that anything from before the year 2000 has no good plot and is going to be boring, otl. >.>; Older anime is usually pretty good. It at least deserves a chance- as does any show. :/
