My idea is to make the Space Core from Portal 2 as a helmet/mask and wear black (with stars maybe). However, I'm not incredibly talented when it comes to costume making, so I'm looking for ideas on how I can pull this off.

That's a great idea! Sounds awesome!
I'd say start off the same way you'd make a mascot head. (Here's a great way: http://catzilerella.blogspot.com/201...and-quick.html ) Then either paper-maché over it or use fabric (I'd recommend maché only because the space core is metal and there's very little fabric that looks like metal). You could probably even use craft foam and paint it like metal: http://www.entropyhouse.com/penwiper...helmsdeep.html
And use wire or rolled up pieces of newspaper and maché over that for the handles. You could use the see-through black fabric for the pupil of the eye then paint around it for the iris, so you can see and it won't have an awkward eye-hole-spot like the Hello Kitty head sort of has.
