Need help with shoes

I didnt know what section of the forums to put this thread so i decided to put it here. I want to make shoes for me cosplay (Black Star from soul eater) but im new to making costumes and such and dont know how to go about it. Is it better to use an old pair of shoes as a template or what? Thanks in advance for the help

It's usually better to use an old pair of shoes as a base, then build around them. You can use fabric, Foamies, paint, etc... And lots of reference photos, try to get different angles of his shoes so you can see every part of them.
