P4: Jiraiya (Yosuke's Persona)

We're going to have a small P4 group at Kumoricon this year, with me as the protagonist/Seta, and Kanji later, a few others, and my friend Rekka as Yosuke.
So I thought it'd be cool to enter a contest as Yosuke with Jiraiya. Volunteered to do it, and while most of the costume looks workable enough, I've come across one small problem.

Thought about using papier mache, but I'm not a huge fan of the bumpy look it often gives off.
Anyone got any advice on how to create a smooth, yet carvable/workable helmet?
Any other tips on the overall costume would be appreciated as well. Picture attached. :>
