Mana make-up critique.
Well what do you think, I did this not long after I found out about J-rock (two weeks after or something) I didn't have so many pictures of Mana so I just guessed how the make-up was. But tell me what you think.

You should attach a picture of what effect you were trying to achieve as well. I think Mana has many similar looks.

I agree, it would be helpful to know which Mana you're going for. Um, in general, the face needs to be *glaring* white.

Hrm... You might want to make your lips a little more shapely... Mana's lips have that painted-on poutiness thing going on, so you might want to try to get some blue lipliner to draw it... Irk.. I don't have a pic off hand that I could post along with this, but I'm sure you know what I mean! You actually have to paint a little above your lip to get the shape right on the top...
Maybe a little darker on the eyeliner, too. But, it's a great start! |

^-~ Mana's lips look drawn on 'cause he's a Japanese Manses and dosn't have big pouty lips :3 So we must draw them on, yes we must!
Not all of Mana's looks are glaring white, but if that's the route you go, I suggest using a sponge to apply the white makeup, as it will help it go on much more evenly. I also recommend darkening your eyebrows, and attempt to give them a more "sculpted" look. Another thing is that you may wish to consider coloring your entire eyelid a dark color, dark blue or black with an eyeliner pencil. Sounds inane, and like, "wtf you talkin 'bout, Lilli?" but trust me, give it a shot. Eyelid completely dark, (Or dark charcoal, maybe. ) then layer all the pretty blue eyeshadows above it, to give the color. Remember, darker to lighter. Hmmmm. Aside from that... Lovely! Where on earth did you find blue lipstick, if I may ask? Edit: Posting while you're asleep is bad, m-kay ._.;;

Thanx!!! Actually I mixed lipstick and eyeshadow, cause I didn't have the right blue color on the lipstick I had. It was kinda dark with a little purple to it. But I had eyeshadow in the right color so I used the lipstick as glue then I took eyeshadow on.

I think the thing that stood out the most to me about your make up is that the eyelids looked ok but under your eye wasn't dark enough

Oh yeah, one thing I noticed from some friends who've cosplayed as Mana is that most of his supreme paleness may just be due to lighting. I took a some pics of them when they had pretty light makeup on and they looked really pale. o.o
But for cosplays like Le Ciel you;d probably need the white stuff ^^ It looks good, and the only thing I'd say you need to do is make your top lip all drawn on pouty like his is and put darker eyeshadow on your eyelids, as was mentioned earlier. ^^ |

Mana's eyes most of the times have two colors, one pale in the lower part, and one darker in the upper part, and a lot lot lot of eyeshadow in the upper part, white in the zone that is near to the eyebrow; he also uses a lot of eyeliner and a lot of mascara, and the eyebrows have to be more dark and clear, but if it's your first attempt I think you did a good job.
the first time I tried to copy mana's makeup I also mixed lipstick and eyeshadow ![]()

The makeup seems very light to me. Visual kei makeup should be much heavier than ordinary makeup -- if you can look at yourself close up in the mirror without feeling embarrassed, you're probably not wearing enough. It's meant to be seen from a distance, or in high-contrast photos. I've seen Mana live from around 8 feet away, which is really not that close, and even from that distance his makeup looked thick and a little scary. ^^;;;
I can't tell if you're wearing any makeup on your lower lid, but if you are it should be heavier for a Mana look. What I do for visual kei eyes is use a pencil to put down a blended line, and then layer liquid black liner over it to make it really deep and dramatic, then set it with a deep-color or black eyeshadow. Pencil by itself never looks dark enough in photos. Fake eyelashes are really important too, big spiky embarrassing ones. I think you did a really pretty real-life interpretation of Mana's look. It has that feeling, and if someone saw you up close you'd still look pretty instead of foolishly overdone. But if you want to do a really accurate Mana look, it needs to be garish... |
