If you pre-wash your fabric, it will do any shrinking or bleeding then, so whatever you sew out of it should maintain its size as long as you don't deliberately abuse it.

I'm planning to make a plugsuit, and I've already decided to make it out of 4 way stretch vinyl.
I've been sewing for several years and I know to always make a mockup, but! Since I don't yet have any of the final fabric I don't know what cheaper material will handle and stretch (or not stretch) similarly enough to the vinyl to make my mock up out of.

I don't know if anyone already asked this, but what material should I use for Maka's black coat from the Soul Eater anime? I'm planning on doing my first cosplay this year, and I think she may be an easy one to make (plus my friends say I look like her), but I'm just really stuck on what to use for her coat. Also, a cheap material would be preferred. Here's a reference pic of her: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3196/...b6dfb05f4e.jpg

My turn! I'm re-doing my Latvia from Hetalia, but I don't know the type of fabric to use. He wears a military uniform, so I'm thinking of Trigger/Target fabric.

I think that fabric would look great. If it doesn't work out, you could usually find that style jacket at Army surplus stores if you have one near you. I would suggest something like the Marine Corps Officer dress blues uniform and adding on military epaulettes

Please help me ID these 2 materials

Jeez! Having so much trouble adding a photo!

Sorry I don’t have a larger or clearer image. I just grabbed a quick screen cap from a DVD. I could really use help with the colors and possible fabrics used for the scarf and the sort of layered part above the scarf. I already know that the scarf is not a sheer chiffon, but it is similar, only a bit thicker. It does not appear to be heavy, stiff or shiny. Even more mysterious, it does not have a seam or any rolled edges. It has to be some type of fabric that doesn't fray when it's cut! As for the other fabric that has tiers or layers, I was thinking it might be some sort of neoprene material since it is attached to a helmet like a cowl (goes down the back of the neck and all the way around), but it does not seem to crease or crinkle like wetsuit material. It appears to bend very smoothly. I don’t think it is vinyl or fleece, although it could be a matte vinyl. It is not shiny either. Any guesses or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Also, any thoughts on how the lines or gaps were created on the cowl?

Update: Well, after really studying several different images, it's another case of "different colors, different fabrics" for the scarf. It ranges from a dark lavender to a bright purple, and the fabric goes from a very soft and flowy dull material to a shinier slightly stiffer-looking material, so I've decided to use a polyester lining fabric for the scarf. Now if I could only ID the cowl! I might just go with a matte vinyl if I can find the right color.

Hey, I'm currently working on a Gaige cosplay from Borderlands 2 and am considering doing the Fragger head that you get ingame as part of my cosplay. My question is, what type of fabric should I use for the beanie? I've looking at the picture for ages and still have no idea what to use XD Any help would be greatly appreciated X3

Here's a pic of what I want to make:

Primsnow, I think that some sort of army camo green fabric would work. I'm afraid I don't know what that's called though.

My question is: I'm planning on going as an alligator with a sword. I'd like to keep it sort of snug (character is pretty thin), but I don't know yet if I want to get stretchy swimwear. I think I'm more concerned with it being comfortable and easy to make than realistic. How would stretch terrycloth, sateen cotton or satin work?

I'm trying to make Kyoko Sakura's cosplay from Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and I'm stumped on what fabrics to buy! I like the look of her coat that one girl made with twill, but I'm not sure what my other options are. Help, please!
Here are some reference pics (I need fabric for everything--coat, skirt, top, arm bands, boot covers, etc):

Jinx's dress? The first thing I thought of was black satin (based on the way it "catches light" in the show), but I really don't want it to look cheap. Also, her purple shawl-thing; the same fabric as the dress, or no? Thoughts?

Even better if the same colour is reproduced in the rest of her costume, i.e. trousers, vest, or accessories, because that would be further evidence supporting the idea that it should be that kind of material, and you could make them match.

Satin doesn't have to look cheap! Browse the special-occasion fabrics at a fabric store and I guarantee you that you'll find some that don't look cheap. They might not even be expensive to buy either, depending on the time of year. Have we just passed prom season? That might explain why my Joann's has them all on sale.

If you want a classy-looking satin, look for something called duchess satin. It's got a very pretty sheen and drapes nicely, and is fairly heavy and opaque as satins go. You'll see it on wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses a lot. More expensive duchess satins can be made of actual silk, but there are some synthetic ones that look fabulous too.

... Disclaimer: I have never worked with it. Satin is slippery and frustrates me. It's a good thing most of my favourite characters wear more practical fabrics. But anyways, it's really pretty.

Just out of curiosity, how much is a good price for it? I'm fairly new to sewing, and although I made my Robin cape out of satin the other day, I intentionally picked something that looked a little less fancy, so what would be good for "duchess satin?"
