So posted here already, but I just wanted to say that I met my boyfriend at our University's Anime Club. We eventually inherited the club from our friends when they graduated and we started going out senior year. It's been almost 4 years since then.

Two weeks ago we got engaged.

There is hope for the geeky folks in Anime Clubs everywhere after all. : D

My clubs not terrible, persay but it can be a bit hetic. The Anime club at my school went through each level of leaership from the IDGAF leader who just wanted to say he was president, the weeabo who kept having Naruto vs.Bleach discussions EVERY WEEK, and the total dictator leader ho had eeryone shit down shut up and do as she said. So some kids split off and made a "Japan Culture Club" in which they shun any new members and watch Anime and attempt making riceballs.

Haven't been to one in a while but the one's I did go too some were good and some were tense. The first one I went too the organizer was the only one who spoke to me and introduced me to the others that were there and also made me feel at ease, a lot of the people were very cool and down to earth (some were odd balls but wouldn't be a club without them) and had a good time discussing art and anime shows and so on. The second one I attended was... not a good experience most of the people were siding with people who had the same interest as them or seem to have the same and others just didn't want to be around everyone else.

I'm the secretary of our club in a highschool in the Bay Area, and just to say, our club is fantastic! over the 2 years my friend (the president of the club now) has completely revamped the club to its full glory. Although only being a highschool club, we get special previews of anime (don't ask me how, but our president has connections) such as Working!2 a month's before its release. So far, we are the second largest club in our school (with ~200 people). We are also the richest club in our school with member donations that total up to $3300+. But before my friend stepped up, the previous president (a goddamn useless piece of crap) only showed "bad" anime, the only good anime he ever showed was Evangelion. He also failed to recruit female members (with only 4 of them out of 50 of them) that was pretty pitiful.

I can't even quote Fight Club here, because that would be giving my school's anime club too much justice. To say we don't talk about it is an understatement, for to those of us who spend our lunches elsewhere, it doesn't even exist. I love the president to death, but I think she's just a puppet for the two who are really in power. However, to be fair, she did inherit the position after the former president left, then the next one got kicked out of the school, and then the next one refused to do anything and eventually got kicked out of the school himself. I'm glad she's in charge, though, because between the two who I believe actually run the show, there is a plot to steal the money granted to the club and instead use it for their private cosplay group.

Out of the handful of times that I actually showed up, they decided to show Hetalia and Kuroshitsuji, and not appropriate episodes, either. I'm a guy, and I don't like yaoi one bit, but regardless of that fact, I was still distraught that they would play something of that magnitude in a high school setting. Granted, it wasn't pornography, but I'm not going to get into the anime club and their history with pornography, for that is another story entirely.

ETA: CozartEnma, do you mind me asking where it is in the Bay Area you live? I'm going to be going to a new school next year, and it's my choice as to where I get to go, so long as it's in the Bay Area.

Oh gosh. Some of your clubs sound so awesome and some seem about as bad as the one at my high school. Here they are calling it J-Link and it's aweful! I'm pretty accepting but the 6 or so people in this club terrify me. Every single one of them is a weeaboo with poor taste who does bad cosplay... Anyone at my school who respects Japanese culture, anime, manga, or cosplay wouldn't get caught dead going to that club. It's really disappointing. I'm considering starting a cosplay club just to get the idea out to the general public and to give people somewhere else to go for that sort of thing instead of being ridiculed for even thinking of J-Link...

The local groups I'm active in are full of 'normal' people, for the most part, you honestly wouldn't know they were fans if you met them on the street.

Also people are very tolerant, anime has become a very large genre and no one really expects everyone to agree on the quality or appeal of one show or another.

Honestly the largest problem we have is groups getting too large and then not having indoor places to meet. Rarely do we have problems with people, it's more just logistics.

No, not at all!
I love my anime club. We've got only 5 dedicated members which we call the "Core 5," and sometimes other people float on in from time to time. But the five of us, man, we're really close despite us being all different ages. We've all got really different personalities too, so together it makes for a real fun dynamic.
We meet on Fridays after school and it's the best way to end a long week. I always feel so much happier after club, and also a little sad that I have to wait all the way until next week.

@Shmasp: We are in Fremont's MSJHS. (fantastic school) ^^ would love to see you here

Cosplay-wise, I can say that we only do GOOD-quality cosplays (most of them are perfectionists and they wear it sometimes at school and we can dress up during Homecoming so that's always fun

The Anime Club at my college is okay, I have fun and we talk about certain Anime and whatnot and watch it, but I feel that we should do a bit more at times since some of the Anime we watch is kinda boring. The president is a good friend of mine and I know he's trying hard to make it good, just none of us have ideas to make it better it seems. :/
