Do I NEED a zipper foot?

The sewing machine I'm using is from my grandmother, so it's super ancient. Like, ridiculously old. So old it's yellow. It's built into a table. There isn't a foot pedal thing - you have to use your knee and spin the wheel to get it started. Among it's tools, it doesn't come with a zipper foot. Can I get by without using one?

Or am I screwed?

if you need to sew a zipper, I might try doing it by hand

You *can* get different feet for those machines.

However, I have a machine from 1933 and the foot that is the "default" suffices as a zipper foot.

If you don't have one that works, you might have to sew it by hand.

I've managed zippers before without a zipper foot, but it's tricksy and you risk your garment AND your machine getting borked. If you can't find an alternative foot for the machine (is it a treadle machine?) then I'd suggest trying it but stopping and going on by hand if it seems to dislike it at all. When I do zippers with a normal foot, I start from the top with the zipper fully opened and sew halfway to three-quarters of the way down and stop. I remove my garment, put the zipper tab up to close it, and sew down the remaining distance. This helps to reduce stress on the machine from the bulk of the zipper tab.

You can actually work without one. But totally matter on which type of zipper you are working with. If is invisible zipper, I recommend that you get another just in case that you kill the teeth of the zipper. Metal teeth zipper then get yourself a bunch of needle caz your needle will break sure when it hits it.

I'm actually using a plastic separating zipper - so I think I'm going to try it without one. I hope it works!

Does it come with a coarding foot or something like that, I actually use my coarding foot instead of the zipper one because it lets me get in closer to the zipper, other wise i would sew it in with the normal foot as best you can then do the rest by hand...anything you can do by machine will help add stability over handsewing
