Scapin and the 1670s

Hello everyone

I'm helpign costuming my first theater production this semester, and it's for the play Scapin, set in Italy 1670s. Google has not been much help to me, since all I can seem to find is this

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1650%E2...700_in_fashion

but since I'm new to researching I was wondering if anyone had any tips on that period, or about going to find that area of history? I believe the time period coincides with the Baroque era, but I'm not too sure.

I've been told that the look we're going for is as close to period as we can possibly get, however, if I'm getting my period rights, we're still in the stays plateau of fashion. Given that stays are time consuming, does anyone know of a good way to fake a look of a stay, or make a mock stay? Like one would a corset? We have at least four women of varying sizes, and we are pulling costumes from another shop as ours is currently insufficient, but I think it would be good if we could start building our own inventory with this play.

Any books, websites, tutorials, and information will help greatly!

I'm not an expert on this period but I think it's just prior to Baroque, I think it's Restoration?

I'm not sure what you mean by mock stay = corset, since stays are basically the precursors to the Victorian corset. You'll definitely need structure to get the right silhouette, so you either have to make separate stays or build a lot of boning into the dresses themselves.
